Fighting Spam
« on: November 12, 2008, 12:50:23 PM »
Some of you have noticed that we've been hit by spammers a couple times this week. Thank you to those who used the "Report Post" button to alert us to stuff that doesn't belong in the forum. Please keep doing that in the future if you see something that doesn't fit our Forum Rules.

The spam problem has actually been worse than what you've seen. There are two types of spammers we're dealing with:

1) Spammers who create accounts and post something in the forum that doesn't belong (like porn, drug advertisements, etc.).

2) Spammers who create accounts for the sole purpose of having a profile in our Members List that advertises and links to a spammy web site (porn, pills, etc.).

We've deleted about 40 accounts in all over the past couple days. Most fit the #2 description above.

What We're Doing About It

For the moment, all new members will have to be approved before their account is active and they can begin posting. (If you're inviting a friend to join, please let them know.)

The drawback is that if a real U2 fan wants to join in a conversation, s/he can't register and make a post right away. That kinda sucks. But we can't see any other better way at the moment to stop the spammers from creating accounts and posting.

When time allows, we're going to investigate how other forums like this fight spam. Hopefully we'll come up with a solution that will let us not require approval of all new members. But it probably won't be soon.

Thats a shame - how are the (possibly) new U2 fans communicate with each other when these spammers keep....spamming  >:( ???
Why don't you try monitoring new users for a month and see if their account can be approved?

That's not a bad idea, but it takes a lot of time from the moderators to dedicate to doing that and for that reason it's really not practical.

(knock on wood) We recently updated the registration form and it's had a dramatically good impact on the number of bots trying to create accounts in our forum. That alone is a step in the right direction, but a determined human spammer could still possibly get through and start posting.

If all users keep an eye out for things and report suspicious posts, I'm sure it'll be fine in the long run.

I'm pretty sure if someone see's a human spammer they'd press the report button asap. Anyway, i'll always be on the alert.

Just below my post. See the button that says "Report Mod"? That's the report button.

Should be about there:

                                          |
                                          |
                                          V

Are you talking about report to moderator button shock?  It is right below your post at the bottom.
