I also think that the album is their most self-assured.

It gives that kind of boost when I listen to it. You have to listen to it with your arms folded. ;)

I actually think it suffers from a lack of self-assurance.  It sounds like they didn't quite know what to do with it, and compromised for fear of alienating the audience with too much electronica - maybe record company execs pressured them to produce something a bit more rock-based.  The now famous 1996 video on youtube shows what a more laid back and confident band would've put out.

The conditions under which they recorded the album is the way to go.  Pop is the outcome of human creativity without giving them time to impose the egoic mind on it.
