Re-recording of Red Hill Mining Town, 2017
« on: April 20, 2017, 02:40:45 PM »
I came on here expecting to see the place awash with chat about the re-recording of RHMT from JT, played in full on Radio 2 here in UK today and, I believe, by Dave Fanning in Ireland this morning too.

It's formally released on vinyl this coming Saturday.

Anyway, for those who've heard it, what d'ya think?  For me, it's ok.  One thing I'm convinced of is it's not 2017 Bono singing the whole thing.  The high notes of the chorus are the original 1987 Bono version...

Not great... very amateur-ish mix.

The synth is way too loud and the bass needed to be more prevalent. I do love Edge's new recording, though. Sounds much better, but I can't really explain why. Maybe his age is showing here and it sounds more professional to me, I don't know...

Also, I'm pretty sure Bono sings the entire song. And although his vocals are too "in-your-face" in the mix, he does sound great.

Need to give this a proper release like they did with the sweetest thing, choose a great first single off songs of experience job done.

A proper release would also not be a one sided 12" record. At least with the Sweetest Thing, we got some old live tracks.

I was a bit Meh about it all but hearing a high quality sideboard through a decent speaker reveals how decent a mix it is, regardless of how pointless it is.
