I'm surprised so many people on the forum are keen to criticise Streets.  I do wonder how many of the critics were fans when TJT and Streets came out.   In 1987 Streets was groundbreaking for U2, certainly not "U2 by numbers".  There is no other song like it on TJT or on the previous U2 records (Boy to TUF).

Thank you, but yes, I was certainly 'around' when it was released. I joined the U2 bandwagon in 1983! The first time I heard the Joshua Tree, and 30 years later, I still rate ISHFWILF, RTSS, TTYW, Exit, RHMT and OTH higher than Streets.

But each to there own, everyone is entitled to their own opinion, and vote how they wish on a public forum. And I respect that.

Yes. Far be it from us to begrudge people's right to be wrong about things....

That's great, and I am glad you like all those other songs.   Initially you listed a pile of songs that came out in the 90s as superior to Streets.  I'm just looking at this from the perspective of where U2 were in 1987.  They hadn't put out a song like Streets before and it was an eye-opener when they released it.   Since its release they've tried to do similar "slow build" songs like City of Blinding Light, and chiming euphoric chorus songs like Miracle Drug, and all this material can make us look back with some jadedness at the song that started it all (that's why I mentioned fans who weren't around in 1987 - I see that doesn't apply to you).  I didn't vote for it but I don't see it as the runt that shouldn't be on the list.  They included it on both Zoo TV and Popmart tours, which indicate they rated it when they were at the height of their creative powers.

I thought I was done with Streets after finding it lacking a spark at the London I&E shows I attended. Then I heard it on the radio earlier this year when i was on holiday in Australia and it really connected with me again. It's the weakest of the four songs lyrically and I want The Fly to win overall but i think Streets deserves it's place here for it's melody, band arrangement and THAT guitar. How I would love to hear it for the first time again!
