I just started wondering about this to myself, and I was interested in what the good people of @U2 had to say on the subject. How many more albums can we expect U2 to release before the band decides to pack it up and vacation in France full-time?

Personally, I have an odd feeling that Songs of Experience could very well be the final release from the band, but it all depends on when this next album (if there is a next album) drops. If we hear Songs of Experience sometime later this year, then I believe U2 have it in them to give us one or two more records before retirement. Obviously, that is a very optimistic outlook and Songs of Experience will likely be postponed a couple of more times, so I think two last albums is the maximum here.

In all honesty I feel like it's absolutely impossible to tell.

You never know how much time in between albums and how long they will want to keep going for. I don't even have a guess. I'm just here for the ride.

No kidding. U2 has to be the most unpredictable and indecisive band of all time...

The thing is, Bono and Co. have been musicians for over forty years. It's hard to see them actually leaving all of that behind for retirement. But at the same time, its starting to seem as if they are growing tired of recording.

ok ill put a number on it.

3. SOE next year, maybe 1 in 2022 or so then the final one in 2029ish.

but the sad part is i think they'll go out with a whimper. Bono wont stop chasing hits and they don't have what the public wants to hear anymore in them. i think the band will simply loose interest in making more albums.

the REAL question is, well they just tour for the sake of touring at that point?

They'll keep producing albums until Edge has settled his housing court case.  :)

Even though i am critical of most of the bands work post Pop I do believe that they themselves think it still stands up and whilsy they themselves believe their work stands up then I think they will keep making music....How long that is for is very difficult to guess - what I will say is that i believe that they will have to break from the album, mega tour, longish break, album, mega tour cycle for them to stay around much longer.

You could argue that they are maybe already doing just that.

Usually, musicians don't use to retire...usually they perform until they die..
But I have a feeling that U2 might release SOE, tour the album and then "retire".
I wrote it in the other thread...I've read an interview where Bono was saying that only recently he has realised that he has a home in Dublin, and this is why it's getting harder for him to leave this home.

Some years ago he said (I think it was in a late night show interview) that he doesn't know if he still wants to perfom on stage with a rock band in his sixties.

And: the Live Nation deal/contract ends in 2020.

Is have the feeling that it's gonna be Songs Of Experience, and maybe - if we're lucky - Songs Of Ascent. After that maybe an GoodBye-tour

They started with "Boy" and so should finish with "Old Man" and the "Old Man Tour", using An Tha's picture on the album cover and promo material.
