U2 are looking for success in all of the wrong places.

The Troubles was featured on a commercial for The Walking Dead a while back and it was very well received by fans of the show (according to YouTube comments, at least). Sleep Like a Baby Tonight and The Troubles are clearly the most loved among the more hardcore fans...

I don't get it. Whatever is so appealing about resonating with the teenage demographic to U2 is beyond me... songs like California and The Miracle just aren't working for them.

"Sleep Like a Baby Tonight," "Cedarwood Road," and "Every Breaking Wave."

"Sleep Like a Baby Tonight" is one of my favorite post 2000 songs, by a long shot.  I love everything about it.  I wish I "got" "The Troubles."  And I usually like off-kilter U2 the best; tihs song -- I could take it or leave it.  I'm also possibly in the minority that likes the album version of "Every Breaking Wave" heads and shoulders above the acoustic or live versions.

"Volcano" through "This is Where You Can Reach Me Now" are solid.  The rest...  meh.  I don't spin this album so much.

Every Breaking Wave
Cedarwood Road
close call between Raised By Wolves and Troubles, but I went with RBW

I think I'm a minority on "Volcano" and "Miracle" too.  I guess I like over the top U2 :0

I thought Volcano would be more popular.

Cedarwood Road, Raised By Wolves, This Is Where You Can Reach Me Now (barely over The Troubles)

I'm still scratching my head over Volcano being on RS 50 Greatest U2 Tracks.  A list that does not include The Fly.

For me, it's one of the most generic and "faux-rock-sounding" U2 songs since Pop. Great idea... just very poorly executed. The lyrics weigh the song down tremendously, and the chorus is boring and weak.

It's my least favorite track but still fun.  I love the Eyes like Landing Lights lyric. Just goes to show you how solid an album it is. Front to back => Solid Listen.  We only get mad cuz we have to wait 5 years.  SOI would get heaps of praise if we were on a 2 year album cycle like the 80s.  Most cohesive album since AB.

The thing I like about SOI is that it feels natural. The band don't sound like they're trying to hard as in NLOTH (although for me the best bits of NLOTH beat those of SOI).

But as has been said, it's their most cohesive and well-rounded album since Pop. A coherent collection of songs that stand up in their own right. Not their most adventurous album but not their least either. At this stage in the band's career I don't think we can expect much more. I'd be happy if their remaining albums were of the same calibre.

EBW
California
Iris

It's been almost three years now and this album is really strong - I am very pleased with it.  I like Miracle a lot as well, and I think there might only be 1 weak track on the album.
