Is Edge's solo voice strong enough to fill a stadium?
« on: July 14, 2017, 04:03:25 PM »
Or is he better off doing canon/harmony with Bono?

A Sort of Homecoming, JT2017 live, high quality. Edge solos the "oh comeaway oh comeaway" bit

My personal opinion is that Edge doesn't have the grit, force and emotion of Bono's voice.
But Edge's voice sounds like a choirS of angels. And it's not easy to sing harmony to the dominant melody!

edit: I know Edge isn't singing at "full force" in that first clip of ASOH. He's still in backup vocals mode. But my argument still stands.

I think Edge has a strong, beautiful voice, but he holds his emotions in more than Bono. I do wish he would sing more lead, but their harmony together is just beautiful. Many times when listening to an album, I've had trouble telling who was doing which part...they can sound so much alike at times. I guess this didn't really answer your question, did it?

I've always found Edge's voice to be really one-dimensional and plain. It isn't awful and is technically fine, but lacks punchiness and dynamics. He is most valuable as a backing vocalist, making up for what Bono's lost.

His voice isn't what would fill the stadium

Maybe it wouldn't fill a stadium, but he did sound like an angel in the Sistine Chapel.

Sometimes I like to sing along with Edge instead of Bono at a concert. Anybody else do that?

for th reasons above i think Bono and Edge are complimenting each other verry well.

Edge filling a stadium, no. But he would rock a theater man! He would give a great show.
He's got a lovely voice.

When he sang SBS during POP it wasn't forceful. His highlight for me is him singing harmony on NYD.

That's really what makes U2 though, four guys with complimentary strengths that make the whole greater than the sum of its parts.

I just worked out to Pop...and was thinking about this thread. Sometimes Edge's background singing...well, it's so subtle that you don't even notice it right away. But, he adds so much to so many songs...

He's got a lot more powerful voice than many singers who are filling stadiums at the moment.

sh**, I just watched parts of Rattle and Hum this morning, watched "Van Diemen's Land" twice and wondered why this man doesn't release solo albums.

Seriously, if U2 broke up and there was more new music output from the four of them in different ways, I'd be interested.
