What if U2 began the SOE tour BEFORE releasing it?
« on: July 15, 2017, 08:20:07 AM »
A strange thought, but yeah, what would you think about the band touring BEFORE they released their next album...would it be exciting to hear the new songs live for the first time? Or do we need to know the songs before the tour begins?

Or, what if they had done this in the past with other albums/tours?

Didn't they start touring behind War before it was released?

Anyway, it wouldn't bother me. Bands used to do that all the time. The one time I saw Heart, it was 5 weeks before Dog And Butterfly came out. I can assure you that the D&B songs' kickassness was in no way diminished by us not knowing the songs.

This used to be done a lot in the past, back when tours were considered to be promotional.

Now that touring is what brings in the big buckaroos you could argue that albums are actually promoting the tours.

Fine by me, as long as SOE is out not long after : I wouldnt want the band touring for six months on songs that everyone will be watching on YT before the album comes out.

I know it used to be done a lot, I'm old!
But, wouldn't it have been just amazing to see UTEOTW or Mofo or Discotheque or Zooropa, or any other number of songs,  live BEFORE you ever heard them? Imagine it...

hmmm...interesting comment, maria. I think the hardcore fans would be fascinated. Maybe it would make the casual fans stop talking and listen? or maybe they would be even more noisy...
I still just imagine hearing some songs, maybe POP songs or AB songs for the first time live, having never heard the recordings. Mind blowing.

Im not holding out much hope for the album, judging by the reports that the underwhelming Little Things and Your The Best thing both being on the album. So much for the Bono BS about the album being akin to Zooropa

I don't see them doing this.  They are already packing in this tour for old material.  I think they will save new material to try to draw people back in again.
