What's Your Favorite New and Improved Album Track Listing
« on: July 27, 2017, 11:19:41 AM »
Thanks to the Scotts from "U Talking U2 to Me?" I was inspired to play with the track listing on some U2 albums. Like most of us, I really love U2, but I'm not always blown away by some of their songs (I'm looking at you, "Miami") or some of the sequencing on the albums. I was interested to see if anyone else had tried playing around with the sequencing on any of the albums. Feel free to share them and the reasoning behind them here! First, some ground rules:

GROUND RULE #1: You can remove songs from the album.
GROUND RULE #2: You can add songs to the album.
GROUND RULE #3: You can only add B-sides from the album singles or other songs from the era to the album. For example, adding Electrical Storm or Ground Beneath Her Feet to ATYCLB is perfectly acceptable. Adding In God's Country to NLOTH is not.
GROUND RULE #4: You can denote Side A/ Side B if you want, but don't feel the need to pick songs in such a way that all the songs in your Side A would actually fit on one side of an album. Side A/ Side B is a really cool way to capture different themes all in one place, so have fun with it.

That's it! Let's have some fun!

The first one that I've done was a new and improved track listing for SOI. Here it is here:

SIDE A
1. Miracle
2. This is Where You Can Reach Me Now
3. Song 4 Someone
4. Cedarwood Road
5. Iris
6. Sleep Like a Baby Tonight

SIDE B
7. California (acoustic version)
8. Lucifer's Hands
9. Ordinary Love
10. Invisible
11. Every Breaking Wave
12. Raised by Wolves
13. The Troubles

Some notes on the ordering:
- I love the songs on SOI but the track list hasn't ever felt right to me. Two big problems for me are: #1 Cedarwood right after Wolves, which I feel robs Cedarwood of the place in the spotlight it deserves. They're really similar in tone and Raised IMO is the better song, which makes Cedarwood feel like an afterthought. #2 SLABT and TIWYCRMN feel like they're stuffed in a junk drawer. They're really great songs but it almost feels like the band just said "Well we don't know where to put them so let's just stuff 'em here at the end." They deserve better than that.
- I deleted Volcano because I can't get into it. I get that it feels like early U2, but I don't think it's good early U2. So I deleted it. I love Invisible and Ordinary Love. Putting them on the record makes the album feel stronger. I also love Lucifer's Hands. Super fun.
- Some thoughts on my re-ordering:
#1) The songs on SOI (and the other SOI-era songs) are really an eclectic group of songs, and I think this ordering really highlights that eclectic-ness without making it feel like a random group of songs.
#2) Even though the album is called Songs of Innocence, there are some more experience-oriented songs on the album. I loved the way the band went from Innocence to Experience on the tour, and I think this track ordering kinda captures that a little better.
#3) I love TIWYCRMN as the second song on the album. It reminds me of TJT, where Streets goes straight into ISHFWILF, which is a very different song from Streets. Also, TIWYCRMN is obviously inspired by The Clash, which I feel like is a good reason to put it at the front end of the album right after a song that's a tribute to the Ramones. Also, TIWYCRMN is a song yearning for a whole lot more songs after it. It's like an appetizer. Putting it at the next-to-last position on the original album is a waste.
#4) Putting S4S and Cedarwood at track 3 and track 4 continues a longstanding U2 tradition of putting the big WOWY type song at track 3 and a really heavy and/or different song at track 4 (e.g., WOWY to BTBS on TJT, One to UTEOTW on Achtung, etc.).
#5) I didn't like Iris until I saw it played live, which goes to show how important track sequencing can be. The original album sequencing kind of groups like songs with like songs - big poppy radio songs at the front (Miracle to S4S), more concept-oriented songs in the middle (S4S to Cedarwood), the junk drawer (SLABT and TIWYCRMN), the really awesome/different closing song (Troubles). After all those poppy songs at the front of the album, you really need a palette cleanser, and I don't think Iris works that well there. I LOVE Iris after Miracle/TIWYCRMN/S4S/Cedarwood. S4S and Cedarwood really capture the concept of the album well, and putting Iris right after those two more innocence-laden songs feels really, really good. Yes I know that isn't chronologically accurate, if that's even what the band was going for, but I love the movement from song to song.
#6) SLABT is such a good song. Though I hate to put such a dark, haunting song right after a song that is about an actual deep, emotional event in Bono's life, I think the movement from really sad to really dark and haunting is beautiful.
#7) I love this sequence form California to Lucifer to Ordinary Love to Invisible. I think it's a good mirror of the beginning of the Experience set from the tour - EBTTRT, Invisible, Mysterious Ways, Desire - which provided a really good breather after the heavy first half.
#8) Also, the acoustic version of California is so so good. The album version is good, too, but the change in the chorus from whoa-oh-whoa-oh-oh in the original to whoa-OH-oh in the acoustic version is amazing.
#9) EBW has to go somewhere. Why not after Invisible?
#10) I love love love the U2 tradition of dark song right before the really, really different closing song (see Acrobat to LIB on Achtung, Exit to MOTD on TJT, Please to WUDM on Pop, and Breathe to Cedars on NLOTH). RBW to Troubles keeps that tradition alive. RBW is maybe my favorite song on the album. I loved how the Innocence set from the tour almost ascended to the peak of RBW, because it captured the journey from Innocence to Experience super super well. Putting it as the next-to-last song on the album captures that.

5 years on and i feel almost exactly the same way i felt when it was still new and fresh. I rank it 6th or 7th. I've toyed with the tracklisting and i use this as my 2.0 playlist

The only album you didn't mention that has this is Atomic Bomb. I wouldn't exactly call that a tradition.

I love this topic and will add mine soon.  They tend to be double album tracklistings.  Ha ha.  I have been adding many of these as playlists and it has been good fun to listen to.
