All U2 Albums Ranked
« on: September 06, 2017, 01:27:26 PM »
Rank all 13 U2 albums from best (1) to worst (13) and explain your ranking.
This has probably been done, but there's always new data to find!

Always fun to do this...

1. Achtung Baby
2. Joshua Tree
3. All That You Can't Leave Behind
4. War
5. Pop
Top 5 are pretty consistent. 1 & 2 change as do 4 & 5. From there it gets tougher...
6. The Unforgettable Fire
7. How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb
8. Rattle and Hum
9. Zooropa
10. Boy
11. Songs of Innocence
12. No Line on the Horizon
13. October

But honestly, these bottom 8 are all so close. It really depends on what mood I'm in.

These are so fluid -- they are mostly an expression of how I feel at a particular time. For example, before NLOTH and SOI was pretty sure I liked POP more than anything. Now I find War up there because I'm listening to it a lot recently.

1. Achtung Baby (sonically and spiritually their finest masterpiece, and the sound of U2 chopping down that god forsaken Joshua Tree)
2. War (I mean it has The Refugee -- the song I blew my car speakers on)
3. All That You Can't Leave Behind (because it hits me with the feels and tears)
4. Boy (the most important U2 album)
5. The Joshua Tree (nice picture of America, but my country pisses me off, and this puts it too much on a pedestal. Plus old folks still think it's their best work and that pisses me off too)
6. Songs of Innocence (as a narrative the most cohesive U2 album ever put together and it has real gems)
7. The Unforgettable Fire (A Sort of Homecoming, Pride, Bad, Wire, and Elvis Presley and America -- especially Elvis Presley and America because it just feels so good)
8. Pop (less interesting to me these days, but still an album I listen through and through)
9. Zooropa (less interesting to me these days)
10. No Line on The Horizon (after SOI I realized how undisciplined U2's song writing was on this record. I used to hold it in higher regard but now it's just TUF without the greatness).
11. Rattle and Hum (these songs were cool when I was a teenager, but now sound too stuck in the past)
12. How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb (Vertigo will always make me rock, Original of the Species is one of the best U2 songs -- but the rest don't feel timeless)
13. October (I still love you -- just not as much as the others, you unfinished sketch of a better album)

1. The Joshua Tree: Side 1 is unreal when you really think about it. "Exit" is also an incredible and underrated track.
2. Zooropa: "Lemon" and "Stay" (plus the title track) all have a place in my top 10 U2 songs.
3. War
4. Boy
5. The Unforgettable Fire
6. All That You Can't Leave Behind: Listened to this one for the first time in a while recently and couldn't believe how much it had grown on me.
7. Achtung Baby: It's great, but the sheer adoration is a bit puzzling. Kudos to the band for the drastic reinvention, but the 1993 followup is just much better in my opinion.
8. Songs of Innocence
9. No Line on the Horizon: I really like this album, but the band has put out a lot of great stuff.
10. October
11. How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb: Lot of clunkers on this one. Some incredible track too, but inconsistent on the whole.
12. Pop: A mess. Here's how I'd fix it: You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login
13. Rattle & Hum: It's a shame this is considered part of their proper discography because it's such a disaster.

Top 4 are basically locked (at least until SOE comes out) and bottom 3 the same (at least until SOE comes out - hope it doesn't end up here) and rest can move around a bit. Interesting to see SOI not faring well in most lists.

Interesting to see SOI not faring well in most lists.

It's averaging at 8th place -- considering the decades of competition, the fact that it's now the previous album (which typically takes a hit), I'd say anywhere from 6-8th place is a good place to be.

To put that in perspective, that's just 1 point behind the average of All That You Can't Leave Behind score so far. Which is far more surprising to me for what I consider a masterpiece. And just as surprising, POP averages somewhere between 5th and 6th place. POP certainly has some love these days from the die-hard fans.
