I haven't seen any comments on this yet.

When "Best Thing" came out... even last year  w/the Kygo remix leak,
lots of comments on

"You're the best thing about me
The best thing to happen to boy"
or
The best thing to happen to Boy"
or
The best thing to happen to  a boy"

on how this was a clever throwback reference to first album title, etc.
Even mentioned here on atu2, and lyrics were published that way.

Now the song is out, and the official lyrics video says:

"The best thing to happen a boy"

Even atu2 says this for the new version.

Hmmm.  not so clever, and doesn't even really make sense.
But listening to it, it could go either way.

Of course, lots of official U2 lyrics..even on albums..are wrong..
But what do you think?
Which is it and why?

I think it just works better for the melody without "to".

I wonder if the song is as much about Bono's kids as it is about Ali. It seems like "The best thing that ever happened to a boy" is as likely as "The best thing that ever happened, a boy", using "a boy" as a place holder for kids in general. Both are too clunky, though.

Good point, Ian.  It least it allows the lyric to make some sense.

Didn't even notice this. Saw another thread on it too. It's just the way we say it here in Ireland.

Someone on another thread also posted that this is how Irish speakers talk. Who knew?

Ok I'm not sure what you mean by that's how how you say it in Ireland.

You mean saying "you're the best thing to happen a boy" is a way of saying
"you're the best thing to happen  TO a boy"?
The TO is understood?

Thanks lazyboy and ian!
OKAY LATER EDIT

Ian posted:

"Forum member lazyboy has pointed out that it is common in Irish English to drop the "to". They made it clear that it doesn't sound weird to a native Irish English speaker. Given the context/timeframe for the events in the song, this makes a lot of sense. " You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login

Thanks so much.  I never would have guessed

Thanks for sharing that. I was wracking my brain wondering why he would say it that way.

Thank you SO much for explaining this. I've been casually looking for an explanation since the single came out, and I'm relieved now to have a reason for it other than "Bono decided he doesn't care about sentence structure anymore," haha.

It's obviously done this way so as to get the 7-sylabylic pentameter for the line.  As Bono often does, he's referencing a Bible verse, or something  He needed that line to be a 7.  Line for line the chorus goes 7-10-7-10.  I'm no theologian but assuredly Bono is referencing some Bible verse.  i.e. something like John 7:10 (7-10)?  Is that how you write Bible verses?  I mean, U2 manipulated the cover of All That You Can't Leave Behind in a similar way, didn't they?  Sorta like of like the band Tool doing "Lateralus" in Fibonacci Sequence...

*The subsidiaries of Vox would like readers to know this is jest.  But could something like that be out there on some album and we've missed it all along?  Conspiracies!  For a while I was convinced that if you replaced the word "love" with "God" throughout the entirety of the No Line on the Horizon album, the whole nature of that record is turned on its head...  After all, in the break of "Stand Up Comedy," the Edge sings "God is love....."  Hmmm....  ;) Holy f***! LOL.

In The Message John 7v10 is
"But later, after his family had gone up to the Feast, he also went.  But he kept out of the way, careful not to draw attention to himself"
Not sure what relevance this has to Best Thing.  But I do know that 30 years ago Bono turned up to a UK festival and was disguised as a steward so that he could see Bruce Cockburn live without being noticed.  It worked in the main.  Bono's 'family' in this instance were Ali and also 2 people now very much involved in the tour crew who were also involved in this festival at the time.  Anecdotes that I heard that Bono went unnoticed checking wristbands outside the venue before being ushered inside for a front row place.
