The Best Thing...enters UK charts at 92 (yes 92!)

Not seen or heard that much publicity/airplay for the single.  It has charted at #92 this week on the Official Charts - UK.  Not even in Billboard Hot 100.

Nothing against the song, really, but I wasn't expecting it to be a hit, really.

The Best Thing tries to be modern musically, but it isn't in major ways (very rockish and oldschool in songwriting and overall arrangement). Sadly, it's not a masterpiece either, which could help bringing some attention. Bono's voice is too strained and unnatractive in many parts of the song. Also, the marketing wasn't really good enough (more now than ever, you should not only sell the song, but also a lifestyle). Another problem is that U2 isn't really targeting a spefic audience sonically or in their marketing (even because of the history of the band of contradicting what their brand represents), which is bad in a commercial point of view. And then there's all the bad hype around U2 and the fact that they are old.

Nobody was paying attention. Nobody cared.

Maybe thats why their was no album news with its release. I am now worried that its poor performance will derail the album...

How do they even determine the charts? Didn't it almost break the top ten of iTunes? Does it take in to account streaming sites such as Spotify? I honestly don't think the charts mean as much as they used to anymore.

my muz biz knowledge is old and crusty been working in it for 17 years lol but I believe bilboard uses digital signatures technology to finger print songs then just catches the radio airplay.  I do not think streaming is considered

What do charts mean anymore.

Really all we should care about as fans is the quality of the music, and that the band is performing live.

1/ We are always concerned about the music, but at least they are still doing stuff.
2/ They are still putting on good shows.

It's their best song in 10 years.
Simplicity, fun, feel good, I love it, it makes me happy and walk tall.

Spot on.....they're too concerned about being relevant and being hip....my fear is now they know the lukewarm reception best thing has received and will now delay the album into next year or next century...or until the end of time.....

boys/...should've picked the blackout or little things....

They wouldn't back out now. The album will do much better.
I didn't bother getting the single, because it was posted on the home page here, and it will be on the album...

Still, they probably had a lot of hope invested in this single and could result in a change of attitude.

so as I expected its a real poor choice as lead single - Blackout got 20 times views than this on line - so we shouldn't be surprised really    its not a great lead single at all - i am a fan since 81 - so I am still puzzled why those close to the band advised this is a great lead single /   Because its not in any measure !!!

Good. Maybe U2 will finally drop this pandering mentality if this song fails to chart well. Of course, what the band is really concerned with is it's reception in the U.S., where YTBTAM is actually performing fairly decently.

Ultimately, I expect that SOE will be a failure and initiate a change in the band's direction. It's time for a reinvention.
