War or The Unforgettable Fire?
« on: September 24, 2017, 05:02:15 PM »
So I went and listened to War and TUF back to back today and realized how different those two projects are. Though most people consider them to be from the same era in u2ís history, I find that they are practically opposite. War is the hard hitting, militaristic album while TUF is atmospheric and smooth. Obviously this has to do with a different production team but I find that this musical reinvention gets overshadowed by TJT/RNH to AB and Pop to ATYCLB. These two albums are so different, itís always tough for me to rank them because I love each so much.  Both have songs in my top 20 (New Years Day/Like A Song.../Drowning Man on War and A Sort Of Homecoming/Wire/The Unforgettable Fire on TUF).  Depends on what mood Iím in but lately Iíve been into TUF more because it fits the whole autumn season imo. Curious to see what others think though!

The Unforgettable Fire should win this one pretty handily. I find War to be a bit overrated, personally. The former just perfectly embodies what I love about ambient U2.

Two great albums but The Unforgettable Fire won for me.  Personally, more tracks stand out on it than War.

They are so different it's almost apples to oranges for me.  I enjoy both for different reasons but don't usually return to either in the full-album state.  When I think of TUF, I remember being in college and living back with my parents while I was doing an internship and listening to "so wind blow through to my heart, so wind blow through my soul."  War is early U2 for me; they were confident and as you said, almost militaristic.  A little too cocky perhaps, but youth tends to be that way, as we haven't yet understood the nuanced aspect of most truths.

I voted War by the skin of my teeth. It gets me a little more pumped up to listen to and I like the energy.

I see War as the end of the first trilogy of U2 albums. The new wave, angry young man, post Clash, post punk era.
The Unforgettable is therefore the start of the second trilogy that leads to the Joshua Tree and "Rock's Hottest Ticket".

That's my feeling, too. That's the era (+ october + boy) that makes me dance. Two Hearts Beat As One is just great

TUF maybe my favorite U2 album. Both Bad and Homecoming are timeless, and the live versions are even better.

Interesting. Iíve never thought about the ďalbum timelineĒ that way but makes sense for sure. Not sure if I could ever put The Unforgettable Fire and Rattle and Hum in the same category though!

I see TUF's musical brothers as OS1 and NLOTH.
