Bono reveals some lyrics to "American Soul"
« on: October 19, 2017, 02:13:34 PM »
"Blessed are the superstars, in their luminescence we discover our own inadequacy.
Blessed are the filthy rich,
for you can only truly own what you give away, like your pain.
Blessed are the arrogant,
for theirs is the kingdom of their own company.
Blessed are the bullies,
for one day they will have to stand up to themselves.
Blessed are the liars
because the truth can be awkward.

So can we assume that 'brother john' is John Lennon?

Than this quote would make sense.

The way I read it, in that section of "American Soul" you have a conversation between younger and older Bono a la "Volcano." One of them is idealistic about America, while the other one sees the pain in the country as outweighing the possibilities. "Brother John" is then Bono himself as viewed by his younger or older self.

Worst song on SOE and one of the worst they've ever released, right up with Refugee, GOYB, SUC.

Oh wow...never thought about that. interesting. I also like the idea of the Lennon connection...that would add a whole new narrative to the song that I never thought about. I thought Brother John was a reference to the Bible or something.

BTW, I laugh when people on here call this song the 'worst song U2 has ever created'...I mean c'mon, just say you don't like it and own it...stop trying to make some false grandiose statement that its the worst ever to validate your opinion. They've created songs that were much much worse than this. stop it already.
