Thoughts about Landlady?
« on: December 05, 2017, 01:24:59 PM »
This song references a landlady, “you”, “her”, “she”.  Are they all the same person? Different people? Why the heck write about a landlady? I’ve never had a landlady that inspired euphoric singing. Thoughts, people?

The landlady is Ali, his wife, because she would take care of things at home while he was far away touring etc.

The first verse is awesome.....really evokes emotion from me.  I love the music and arrangement of the verses, but the chorus is a bit weak.  Then comes the "Every.....Every.....Every...." ending which is fantastic.  A very good song, indeed.

FYI, it's not conjecture, Bono specifically has said numerous times it's about Ali Hewson.  Here's one example:

Ah, that makes sense, but still not my favorite choice of words. But who knows, maybe there’s an inside joke in there. 😄

This song is clear album filler, but I do quite enjoy it. I think the lyrics are great.

Brilliant song, some of Bono's most intimate lyrics.

Kristy McColl who sequenced TJT named an album "You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login" which was probably a play on Electric Ladyland which is where SOE was recorded. Make sense?

I think it's a fantastic song. I sort of get some sense of it also being about Iris from some of the lyrics.

Astute. I'd say that the ending is almost incongruently great...almost a better ending than the song deserves on the whole...and I see it as a pretty solid song. That "every" sequence is something.

Surprisingly good, as far as I'm concerned.  It really is a beautiful song and sentiment.

The 'parking space' lyric is obviously an homage to 'empty as a vacant lot'. I can't wait for U2's subscription themed gift called 'Park'.
