"And in the end..." the future of U2
« on: December 05, 2017, 11:32:22 PM »
I've listened to this album a dozen times now and I continue to have the same emotional response to this wonderful collection of songs: this album feels like a farewell record.

I'm interested in getting others thoughts on this.

I haven’t gotten that impression, but I can see what you’re saying.
Personally, I’d hope they have more of a banger ending

I definitely see why you can think that and maybe it is, but I think when you go back to SOI, Bono said he was challenged to write more about his early years and I see it that SOI and SOE are both born from Bono's examination of his past. And that might mean this is now the end because he has done that, but hopefully it more likely means that they will look at other themes for the next album. I would definitely expect something pretty different next time around (if there is a next time) and hopefully it is towards the more daring elements of NLOTH than the solid but bland Bomb type direction.

I had thought there was supposed to be three related albums:  SOI, SOE, and SOA (Songs of Ascent).

I think this is the start of the farewell recording. I think Songs of Ascent if that is what they choose to go with will be there final album. It makes sense in the trilogy and just in the title alone.

My ideal outlook on U2's Future:

Songs of Ascent
-finish off the trilogy, 2020

A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius
-everything experimental, 2022

Man
-close off everything that started with Boy, 2026

Caught Up in the In-Betweens:
-all unreleased/unfinished, alt versions, great live versions, recording process outtakes, etc. comprising 466 separate tracks, 2030

I love the idea of Man. That would be genius.

I can sort of see it, but at the same time I feel like they left the album on a more somber note. If they're gonna be done I have a feeling the last song on the album will be "40"-esque -- at least I hope so. I would much prefer them leaving on an upbeat, happy, "look forward to the future even if we're gone" sort of song

"A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius" would actually be a hysterical final album name.

I would love a satirical album title from the boys again too.

It's a good book too.

I think it crossed their minds that this would be the last album because Bono said Little things would be the last song on the album. However, I think the Trump re-write changed something.
I would like to see one more dark intense studio album with Eno as a sign off

This isn't their last album.  They've talked about their future in several interviews with no hints at this being the end.  Also that thing they did in Berlin is not the kind of publicity stunt you do for your final album.

I don't think this is their last. But part of me would be happy if it was, because I feel it would be a brilliant way to finish. SOE is a late career high for me. But then they could release something even better next time and I'd be glad they carried on  ;D
