Ranking SOE in U2's catalogue
« on: December 07, 2017, 11:51:43 AM »
Ranking U2's whole discography is very difficult and we can always see the diversity of opinions with every single album, although some are more unanimous than others. Anyway, let's focus only on SOE, where do you place it in your ranking right now, regardless of what would be the others?

Top 7 for me, which is pretty amazing, actually. It's disputing its position with POP right now and far above the other albums below it.

I placed it in my top 7 also.  Every time a new U2 album comes out, I get excited and tend to over-rank it initially.  I wanted to say top 5 at first, but then decided to curb my enthusiasm.  For me, all of the songs are at least "pretty good" to great.  IMO, this has the least amount of skippable songs (maybe 2) since Achtung Baby (which has zero).  I'm not ranking it up there with AB (my top U2 album), just saying that they did a good job of making sure every song was at least listenable and no bad songs.

Overhyping new releases is very common indeed, but right now I believe SOE has more chances of going up than down in my personal preference. It's that good. Of course, I'd love to tweak it a little bit to make it an undenieble masterpiece for my tastes (because it's close), but even my Top 3 U2 albums have some weak spots in sequencing or production or even a song or two that I don't like. What's important is that the problems are overshadowed by the higlights and the consistence, bringing passionate longevity to those albums... so let's hope SOE will live to the same standards.

I have faith!

But Top 7 is already within a range that I always thought of as "great U2 output".

Definitely in the top half of their discography (just outside the top 5). Seems like one of their more consistent albums; not a huge gap between top and bottom songs for me.

3. Songs of Innocence
4. Achtung Baby
5. Songs of Experience

Top 10... It's not a bad album and certainly better than NLOTH, HTDAAB and October. It wont reach my top 7 though as U2 just have too many great albums.

I put it at 8, best of this century but not up with their greatest albums.

I have it 5th at the moment. Probably not going to go up from there but could drop down a spot or 2 once the newness wears off.

Top 7. At the moment spots 5-7 are being fought between SOE, Pop and Unforgettable Fire. My top 4 are AB, JT, Boy, ATYCLB.

Happy to see votes for Top 1 and Top 3, while a majority of 75% thinks of SOE as Top 7 or even higher.

It does look like this will be a loved album.

Who can say how I'll feel in a few years, but right now it's sitting at #3.  Could be just that at this point in my life I'm really resonating with the themes and sounds.  I'm quite sure it's their best album as a cohesive whole since ATYCLB at least.

#9 for me atm. More consistently good than anything else in the new millennium, but the competition's tough.

This is hard to say because I know I ranked No Line in the top 3 when it first came out, now I'd probably put it somewhere towards the lower middle, for now I'm inclined to say top 3, but I chose top 5, only time will tell, what happens to us personally with these songs, how they play live, etc.

But I'm beyond a doubt thrilled to have it and listening everyday.
