I think it is definitely the best possible opener for that album. A clear statement right at the beginning.

i have to say,,,,this has to be probably the most downbeat...if not most depressing opener...to a u2 album ever. this is a b-side at best or an obscure album track....i guess they wanted to go against type,,,,but meh i want to feel on a high like i did with discotheque, bd, vertigo,,,even NLOTH....

Sorry for you that it didn't do what you wanted it to do.

Or I suppose, it could be what U2 wanted to release.

"Nothing to stop this from being the best day ever..." ....doesn't sound so downbeat to me.

Yup...still listening...

The best song on the album.

Love the opener.

Would have been an interesting single.

This is such a beautiful song. I love it. Bono meeting his mother in heaven. His best day ever! At least that's how I interpret the song.

Definitely really interesting. Love it as something that makes the album more cohesive. This and 13 really tie up a lot of the themes of the record. If it were in the middle of the record, I'd probably skip it, kind of like I do with White as Snow or 4th of July. Interesting as an album piece, but not something that really rewards re-listens in the same way that Blackout or Red Flag Day. It sounds like I'm down on it. I'm not. Just not a jammer.

I think having this song as the opener is a stroke of genius. I love it. If they had opened with Blackout.....ugh.

I love the blackout! But I like it at the end where it is.

Agree. Love is all we have left is an amazing opening song and sets up the rest of the album perfectly.

The song is great and actually my favorite songs on SOE are the ones produced by Andy Barlow like Little Things, Landlady and Book of your heart. I had this thought that if they go back working on Songs of Ascent, it will be produced by Andy Barlow with Eno  and Lanois.

I've been reading the RS interview and its seems the song is about the younger and the older Bono. Does make more sense indeed now that I'm thinking of the line  "you argue but you can't accept"   :) .

These songs are exactly my favorites as well! Plus Get Out Of You Own Way.

yeh but its so downbeat,,,its not a happy upbeat tempo song like vertigo or even the miracle....u2 albums previously start with intent, power, groove and purpose.  this one starts with a resignation to defeat....

could easily have been a left over from passengers or the million dollar hotel soundtrack....and may be it is, who are we to know...

My favourite on the album and I would dearly love an album of this sort of thing.
