13 (there is a light) about Paris terrorist attack!
« on: January 11, 2018, 10:22:22 AM »
Hello everybody,

I'm french, and I live in Paris.
When I listened to "Songs of Experience" the first time,
I was surprised to find not a single song about the Paris terrorist attack.
Then, I digged the lyrics of the album and figure out that "13 (there is a light)" is about this sad event. As you know, it happened the 13th november 2015, that's why I'm pretty sure this song is called "13".
I also notice that the closer songs of SOI (The Trouble) and SOE (13) have the same theme (terrorism).

What do you think about this?

I believe its a reference to Psalm 13.

Not being familiar with the Bible I googled psalm 13 and that makes sense.  I think Bonos lyrics are very much influenced by his life experiences and he draws on the passages and psalms  from the bible to help make sense of them and give him strength and he is a bit of a genius and maybe the connection is also the terror attacks in Paris.

Anyway the beauty of his lyrics are that even people like myself who have no interest in any form of religion can really connect in any way one chooses with his lyrics.  I think that is part of his brilliance.

Great interpretation. The word terror in the first line kinda gives it away. Regardless the last lines seem 'someone like me' seems to suggest a personal and direct connection.

Bono seems to have built up a personal tolerance to these barbaric acts. If anyone was to write about the intersection of religious and political violence and personal issues it would be Bono.

It could also be about elevators.

I believe its a reference to Psalm 13.

It's the first thought I had... I was thinking about "40",
but this song is also about Paris, I'm sure of it.
The band was in Paris back then.

I think it's a smart move to not be explicit.

I thought they just called it 13 because it's track 13 and they can't call it Song for Someone.

Maybe it's one of the reason why it's called 13, but U2 are smarter than this.

Remember 'boots' as a release song for NLOTH. Smarter, most of the time.

But "Get on your boots" is a great song partly about walking on the moon back in 1969
and watch the earth and the humankind from a space perspective, but people didn't get it... unfortunatly.
This was the theme of 360°tour.
Here goes some of the lyrics
"The future needs a big kiss
Winds blows with a twist
Never seen a moon like this
Can you see it too?"

Space Oddity. Dry Ice, 360 tour, illuminati... gotcha!
