They are not coming back.  If so, they would be promoting it.

Agree...I was just on face book and they had an advertisement and Lamar is mentioned completely separate and then U2 is mentioned in the promo real.  But I agree, I think that was it unless they play that barge footage at the end of the show.  But I think that was it.  At least they got a huge applause!  That is something. lol

Thought they had a pre recorded segment...

That is what TMZ was reporting...that the pre-recorded thing was American Soul.  Variety also reported it, but their version was that the pre-recording was going to start the show, then cut to Lamar and then U2 would appear live on stage to sing Get on your own way...but that was all speculation.  We know the footage of the barge is real though and it most likely was American Soul.  Perhaps it was a video shoot for an upcoming video?

They also said in a unique way...I think it is the barge footage.  Hopefully it is the barge footage and then they also appear live to do Get on your own way.  Just excited for them to have more air time.  Looking forward to it!

As someone peripherally involved in the music industry on the legal side, I canít imagine the hellacious stress and weeks of dealmaking Oseary and his team had to go through to negotiate U2ís appearances on this show, given this late stage in their career, their commercial decline, and the fact they are not nominated for anything.

As someone peripherally involved in the music industry on the legal side, I can’t imagine the hellacious stress and weeks of dealmaking Oseary and his team had to go through to negotiate U2’s appearances on this show, given this late stage in their career, their commercial decline, and the fact they are not nominated for anything.

I am not in the industry or anything, but I don't think getting U2 on a show like this would be a hard thing to do.  U2 is still pretty popular, just look at the tour from last year them having the biggest tour of the year.  U2 still commands a lot of attention and I don't believe it was a hard sale to get them on the show.

They just announced U2 again, this time they say U2 is rocking the harbor in New York City.  So this looks to be the barge footage or U2 is live on the barge.

I agree it was a really good performance.  I kind of wish it was live on stage, but I love the fact that they did it with the statue of liberty in the background.  They sounded good and is was very good overall.  I also like the intro they got which was great.

They were great.  I'm addicted to Get Out Of Your Own Way right now.  Glad they played that instead of American Soul...  I just don't like that they followed that emotional Kesha performance.  I was hoping they'd go to a commercial, or give an award, or do anything but go straight from Kesha to U2 like that.  I feel like U2's great performance will be forgotten because of what preceded it.

LOL...

What were you smoking when you wrote that??

I want some..

This is U2...

We could write 20 threads full of artist/bands that were "more popular" than U2 but they're all either dead, retired or currently touring Indian casinos in the U.S.

U2 is still the biggest band on the planet.

I had a good laugh...

No doubt there is probably some truth to this.   What a difference 10 years makes.   I could make an argument that SOE is worthy of an album of the year nod for next year, and that LIBTAIIW may be worthy of a song of the year nom, but that would have to be in a parallel universe.   That is obviously no longer an award show for a rock band.

You have no idea what you are talking about.  Artists' appearances on shows like that do not happen with quick phone call or an email.  They are the result of lawyers and executives arguing and negotiating for weeks over contract terms which dictate the strict parameters of the performance/appearance.  U2's executive team did an outstanding job leveraging their diminished (but still-formidable) weight in the industry to get U2 exactly what they wanted.  Trust me - the Grammy people were not beating down U2's door begging them to perform a new and relatively unknown song on a barge in the Hudson River.  This was something U2 and their team masterminded, pitched, and fought tooth and nail for.  Ten years makes a huge difference.  This is not the U2 of 2008 that could basically show up unannounced and do whatever they wanted, whenever and however.
