Rank 21st century U2 albums
« on: January 29, 2018, 08:36:12 AM »
Songs of Innocence
No Line on the Horizon
Songs of Experience
How to Dismantle An Atomic bomb
All That You Can't Leave Behind

Hard to rank the bottom 2 as they are easily the worst two albums for me, but have strong lead singles. HTDAAB just edges it for me. Songs of Innocence their best by some margin, nearly every track is strong. NLOTH is let down by a weak middle section.

Cool idea for a discussion! Here's my 2 cents, which are worth considerably less than that ;) :

Songs of Experience
All That You Can't Leave Behind
Songs of Innocence
No Line on the Horizon
How to Dismantle An Atomic Bomb

Still too early to do this, but here’s where I’m at right now.  I’ve really been “experiencing” the new album in a different way (and in a good way!) lately.

Ahem…  as of today…

1)   No Line on the Horizon (I have an irrationally strong love for this album).

2)   All That You Can’t Leave Behind (not an album I turn to often, but I still gotta respect).
3)   Songs of Experience (I could easily see this moving up to #2 in the future).

4)   Songs of Innocence.
5)   How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb.

1. No Line on the Horizon (#4 on my all-time U2 catalog.  I see a lot of complaints how U2 is too popping now, which I agree.  This most experimental, rock album since POP ironically! Love every track on it.)

2. How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb

3. SOI (Cedarwood Road,  Raised by Wolves, Iris, The Troubles, some the best.)

4. All That You Can't Leave Behind

5. SOE (Love Is All We Have Left, Lights of Home, The Little Things That You Give Away, Red Flag Day.  The rest, ehh.  Too sweet and a little cheesy for me.  I like my U2 a little more gritty.  But that's me.)

SOI
NLOTH
SOE
Bomb
ATYCLB

1st and last are easy. 2nd to 4th are tricky and I could easily move them all around. NLOTH has some flawed brilliance amongst the very average rock songs, SOE is still too fresh to properly consider but has some very good songs and no stinkers and Bomb has some very strong tracks but for some reason the whole is not greater than the sum of the parts (mathematicians need not comment on how that could be possible).

Great minds think alike!
I've never understood the love for ATYCLB. It's U2 at their blandest. NLOTH was half great, half not so great. But a breath of fresh air after the previous 2 albums.

3. Songs Of Experience
4. All That You Can't Leave Behind
5. No Line On The Horizon

I answered this question with a slightly different ranking on the thread ranking the entire catalog. The only difference is I switched the rankings of the Songs Of albums

SOE
HTDAAB - 7
SOI - 6.8
ATYCLB - 6.5
NLOTH - 5.7

The numbers are from a survey I recently did, where I ranked over 200 U2 songs on a scale of 1 to 10. That allowed me to come up with average ratings for each album. The survey didn't include SOE, but I intuitively feel I like it the best. NLOTH has some songs I love but also some I can't stand so it has the lowest average.

Hmmm...

1/ NLOTH (criminally under-rated in this community. U2s most adventurous album in this period. will age well)
2/ ATYCLB ( I think we are all tired with a lot of it. but I think it deserves more respect. good memories of that tour too)
3/ HTDAAB ( I understand why people don't love it. i can remember it badly. but give it a chance again... )
4/ SOI ( strong album. with a bit of cheese )
5/ SOE ( lacks some kind of authenticity. something about this album are just rubbing me the wrong way.not awful )
