What does it mean, cause it's gross.

Edited to add: being on the same album as Babyface makes it Grossropa. Vorsprung durch grossness.

Listen to the intro... it's a song about the former USSR with daddy being the West/Capitalism. Also Babyface is about television.

Cool!! There is hope!! Cause I like that tune!

But I'm not seeing any obvious USSR-West stuff in the lyrics. Help me out a bit more?

Yeah, I know Babyface involves TV. TV and massive creepiness. But I don't like the tune much anyway so I'll just file it under "Lolita was a critique not an endorsement."

I should clarify. I realize Babyface might be something like a commentary on how fans can perceive a relationship with a celebrity, like the band members, and it's not remotely real. Ok. But "slown down child let me untie your lace" will never cease to be barforama for me. If our narrative creepaholic could have been licking the TV glass for someone percieved as a woman, cool. But the imagery is unsalvagable for me.

Ooooooh, the intro... That's some kind of anthem? I don't know what it is.

I feel like Jeff Goldblum muttering about how he's talking to himself.

I remember an interview with Bono from a while back and he said Daddy was Paul McGuinness and how he was always there to rescue them in the early years.

I thought the song was about someone struggling to become independent, with Daddy having to constantly bail the subject of the song out of bad situations because he/she can't do so himself/herself.

Side note: I was excited to see this song brought up, because this has become one of my favorite U2 songs ever. I throw my playlist on shuffle and as soon as that intro kicks in, the volume gets cranked and I'm fist-pumping like crazy.  ;D

I love the song but the Daddy sex stuff is disgusting even if it's just metaphorical.

Did someone tell you that?  I wouldn’t have picked that up from the lyrics.

After I saw that comment I watched the Sydney version of the song and indeed the TV screen shows a hammer and sickle, so there must be something to it. But that's all I've got.

Interesting.   Never made a connection there.   Also, always thought/assumed Babyface was about Donyale Luna.   She was the first black model on the cover of Vogue.   Learn something new every day..   What’s your theory/understanding of the meaning behind EBTTRT?

EBTTRT? It's about sex, what else? 1991 was the year Bono figured out giving can be as good as receiving. See also: Mysterious Ways.

I beg to differ but to each his own.   The line from MW that goes ‘One day you will look back and see, how you were held, how by this love’ might not be about sex.
