Takes? Were U2 being massive pricks? Did Phil deserve that? What was that phone call blowoff about? Could their heads have been any further up their ar**s?

U2 were drunk and having a good time. It was funny, but not very nice. I remember watching it live on TV and was surprised when they did that. Contrast that with the way U2 accepted awards post 2000. I've been to the bar where they accepted the award there in Dublin.

Was it really funny though? Just seem like massive dickwads to me.

I'm hearing impaired so I can't hear everything. Maybe I'm missing something.

Yes; they were being jerks.  One of the few times when they have.  They aren't saints but I think they are people of very high standards, especially today.

I think the only thing that approached being mean was the joke about their parents liking Phil Collins' music.  The rest of it was relatively standard awards banter with added stout.

I agree they came off a bit like jerks but it was also what 1 or 2 in the morning after how many drinks?  Should have been pre-recorded.

Spirit of ZooTV. That's appropriate behavior for a pub.

Well I don't think this was their proudest moment, but I am very glad I'm comfortable saying they would not do this now.

lol, true.  It did take a good while longer with them than just about anyone else, though.

No matter who you are, or how nice you are, if you drink long enough, and you get around friends, you eventually are going to have an incident where you drink too much and you say something you shouldn't. There's also a point to be made that, at the time, U2 were going out of their way to change their image. It may have been the first time they said or did something questionable to TV during that era, but it wouldn't be the last.

Wow! The pub was still open in 1999. It closed sometime in the 00s I believe.

Adam Clayton was saying that the bar tender Patty was a big fan of his music and then he said so were all the bands parents, to which Patty stated, "I'm not that old", which caused Adam to lose it. I suppose it was funny in the sense of how shockingly disrespectful it seemed to be.

I didn't find it that funny (at least not like Adam) or that disrespectful (old age jokes are just old).  I mean in 1992, Phil had been around a long time with Genesis and his greatest moments as a solo artist were probably behind him.  So it's probably also true that the band's parents might have been fans....or at least people in that age group were fans.  He's 10 years older than Bono and has about 10 years on their career.

Was it even an issue at the time?  Did Phil Collins ever discuss the exchange (it was a tough spot to be in....interviewing a band across the pond while they are drinking). Have we run out of things to be offended about today that we are reaching back in history?
