Apollo Theater June 11, 2018

Nobody live-posted this?

I only joined at the end of GOOYOW so I wonder what I missed - but jeez I got so many goodies I can't believe I missed much.

We knew we were getting Angel of Harlem and they delivered a full band version. There was a verse at the end, new or new to me at least. Couldn't hear the words but a very nice meter, definitely sounded good.

A new and interesting arrangement of Love Comes to Town.

I'm probably going out of order here but we got Wild Horses. It was ok.

We got EBW and Bono f***** up the beginning and they started over. I don't mind that, he's comfortable flubbing it, I admire that deeply.

Stuck in a Moment sounded AWESOME.

The crowd was AWESOME. Hard cores filling up the house. Everybody knew all the words to everything. Even American Soul, which doesn't get much love, got the full house on the chorus and RefuJesus.

I hope we get a mixing desk audio.

Will be good to get a bootleg of it in due course. Wild Horses and Out of Control seem to be the highlights for me. Nice that EBW played but apparently not full band. Nice to see Electric Co on the setlist too.

Oh, bland for sure. Every show on this tour got Angel of Harlem, When Love Comes to Town, Every Breaking Wave, Out of Control, Red Flag Day and the like. And a flipping horn section.

Something something something something Pearl Jam/Springsteen/Radiohead.

I read that like three times.

Then opened my mouth to say "But...?"

Shut my mouth and thought another second.

Then comprehension finally dawned.

Blah blah Springsteen blah blah indeed.

Bland?
They kicked ass by opening with 3 classics, they played several songs rarely played - with horns and they showed they can kick but without the fancy production. Looked pretty cool to me.

I’m just spoiled and not excited by those songs since I heard them all live in the past 3 years. Sorry not sorry? Seriously, when I heard Electric Co was played at Uniondale last week, it really didn’t excite me since it was played so much in 2015. The horn section was cool but they really didn’t pull out a rarity like Love Rescue Me, silver ang Gold, Heartland, etc. Was really expecting more Rattle and Hum. Not to mention the fact the Edge said “radical ideas”...

Well, nothing to be sorry about... that said, I've never heard Angel of Harlem or When Loves Comes to Town live at all. Never even heard Desire until last month. Throw that on top of stuff like Red Flag Day or Wild Horses, which most of us have only read about them playing as opposed to actually seen in a live capacity. I wouldn't say that's really bland at all.

Plus, I'd imagine seeing those songs in a close-up context adds something to the experience. I certainly don't see a song live one time and think, "That's it! Never again!" And for the most part, those are songs that would go down rather well live. I'd rather see that than have them play songs only 20% of the audience knows and might not sound right live (or need a key change which may affect that or not, like Bono seemed to hint to someone once about ever tackling Heartland) again.

The Rolling Stone article kind of put that into perspective as well...

But with the Apollo's orchestra seats taken out to make room for sweaty, crammed general admission pit in front of the stage, it really felt more like a proper old-school club show, albeit one where servers walked around offering free beer and wine. (It stood in stark contrast to the SiriusXM Guns N' Roses show of last year where they played the exact same set they'd done all tour and barely acknowledged the fact they were playing a place 40 times smaller than their typical venues.)

The set and the gig sounded good to me.  I'd be proper excited if I was there.
When are they going to do this kind of thing in the UK??

Has anyone recorded the broadcast of the show? I don't have Sirius but would love to hear it. Thanks so much: You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login
