  • "Hey, I've been waiting to get home a long time"
One of the things I was most interested in seeing on the E&I tour was how a U2 concert without "Streets" would fare for the general audience. Well, at DC night 2, the absence didn't seem to really hurt the concert; the audience seemed to adapt pretty well to the new songs. A corresponding big surprise to me was that "One" seemed to take the place of "Streets" as the shared community emotional high point. I'm used to the chorus being a massive audience singalong, but pretty much the entire arena seemed to know the entire first verse by heart, and a good percentage seemed to have the rest of the song memorized. I don't recall seeing that on prior tours. How did everyone else's experience run with the absence of "Streets"? Did "One" or another song seem to take its place?

Off-topic but clearly not Staring at the Sun. Such a snoozer but I bet Edge lobbies for it because he gets to harmonize so well. A vocal treat for him to perform.

Well, Bono seems to like the melody of SatS too.

I really hope the Europe leg of the tour has a major shake up in the set list.

Ditch all the “Love/Hate America” songs (SATS, Pride, GOOYOW, American Soul) and the rehash section of Cedarwood Road-SBSunday needs to go.

The encore needs a punch as well. Other than Acrobat, a lot of this set is really uninspired.
A few things I would do...
*new acoustic song to replace SATS (do something interesting here we haven’t heard(.
*bring in Ultra-Violet instead of Beautiful Day
*WGRY Wild Horses needs to be permanent!
*I would bring back Streets (never mind all of this it won’t fit the theme of the show nonsense)
*Ditch All Because of You for good.
*City of Blinding Lights is not nearly good enough to keep returning to the sets every other tour.

What about this for a set;

Love Is All We Have Left
The Blackout
Lights Of Home
Ultra-Violet (Light My Way)
I Will Follow
The Electric Co.
Gloria
Red Flag Day
The Unforgettable Fire
Until The End Of The World

(Intermission)

Zoo Station
Vertigo
Desire
Acrobat
You’re The Best Thing About Me
Please (acoustic)
A Sort Of Homecoming
Bad
Where The Streets Have No Name
The Little Things That Give You Away

(Encore)
Who’s Gonna Ride Your Wild Horses?
Landlady
One
Every Breaking Wave
Love Is Bigger Than Anything In It’s Way

I Will Follow and Gloria, and perhaps the long intro version of Pride save this show. The band seem to have the most fun playing these particular songs.

Love is Bigger is a highlight, and One as well, but I think they can't be compared with Streets, no other song can take place instead of Streets. It's a very amazing moment, when the guitar starts, and then the rest. This moment is magic, and the energy in the audience is amazing. No other song can ever reach that.

I thought Blackout, Pride, American Soul, and I Will Follow were definite high points.

To your I Will Follow & Gloria point, I agree and wish they would tap into that energy for the next album, if it is not SOA.

I'm going to have to disagree with you hear. In leu of no Streets I think City of Blinding Lights filled the spot rather well. Much better than in years past.

COBL totally deserves to be on the setlist for every show. It's one of their best songs and it's very popular amoung their younger audience.

More me the highlight was the darkness of Staring At The Sun with the footage of the white supremacists marching, followed by Pride as a passionate rejection of it. I never thought Pride would be a highlight of a U2 show again, but on E+I it has been.

Surprised I didn't reply to this thread before.

For me the highlight was American Soul. Unfortunately my experience of the show was somewhat dampened by my seated section but for AS I decided people would have to fight me before I sat down.

For my 12yo daughter, the highlight was The Blackout, and it was a big highlight for her. I'd played the song for her before and she thought the song was fine. But live? It BLEW UP for her and it's her (non-anime) song for 2018. She cites "the beat" as its main outstanding characteristic, but she also really dug the visuals at the show, and liked how LOUD it was, saying that helped it get into her brain.

I did not know right away what impact the show had on her, but a few months later, I'd homestly say U2 is her band of 2018, the way Bruno Mars and Imagine Dragons wrre her 2017, and Meghan Trainor was her 2016. She of course is not a hard core fan by any stretch, but she really likes SOE and somewhat likes SOI and the main hits from ATYCLB. She does not seem to relate to ANY 20th century U2.

Her friend who was super into SOI has now been exploring SOE too. I heard her play Landlady, for example. They both also dig The Crystal Ballroom.

Anyway, the show converted someone to casual fan status, and introduced an existing casual fan to another album.
