In a Little While - and bonus jazz question!
« on: July 22, 2018, 06:16:56 AM »
What genre song is this? Is it just down-tempo rock or is there something else, too?

Does Bono's whiskey voice make the song or do you find it detracts?

I think it is amazing how well he sings now compared to ATYCLB.  His voice was about gone then.

I know, we are all so lucky. His voice has changed and we've lost some things, but in other ways he's better than ever.

But there's some charm for me in In a Little While. He certainly doesn't hold back, he really gives it, and that's really important.

Does anyone think U2 have any songs that could fit in the jazz genre in any way? Good lord, there's rock, blues, soul, disco, electronica, gospel, country, punk, and pop - but what about jazz?

it's about time the rest of the band joined the bass player, so yes we do need an obviously jazz influenced song.  It would need Edge on piano though.

Been mulling this over. I've Got You Under My Skin is by Cole Porter, so they've at least performed one, though they didn't write it and didn't really emphasize the jazz elements.

I feel much more familiar with soul, and would be willing to make controversial arguments like I Fall Down is soul. But jazz, I don't understand. I'm not even requiring a full-on obvious jazz song. Like ISHFWILF was gospel in structure even before we got the full gospel choir. So can anyone suggest possible songs that may be rock but have some jazz structure to it?

For example, anything off NLOTH? Jazz is kind of experimental, it goes in different places, the structure of the song isn't so rigid.

I took this right off topic. I'll amend the title.

For me, his voice doesn't distract on that album  It does fit the nature of the songs.  Speaking of ATYCLB, I was listening to KBCO radio out of Boulder this morning (the charm of iHeart radio) and they played Wild Honey.  I don't ever remember hearing it on the radio before.

U2 did the lounge Sinatra with Two Shots Happy.  Jazz as a concept is all over the board, but no U2 song comes quickly to mind.

It's basically a soul song.

IALW? Yeah, that's it, thanks for confirming.

So, yeah, there are lounge songs like Velvet Dress, but after listening to some jazz this morning, nothing rang a bell for a reeeeeaaal jazz song. Could be interesting if they tried to tackle that. Would love to hear Larry do jazz drums.

Man I often can’t think of what songs the abbreviations are.  IALW?

Aha, yes, that's the one. But out of context I would have been having to figure that one out too. Somebody wrote ARATHH recently and it took me a loooooong time. (I won't torture you. It's A Room at the Heartbreak Hotel.)
