Favorite lines from a U2 song?
« on: November 19, 2008, 10:44:47 AM »
What are your favorite lines from U2 song?  Each of us must have favorites that stay with us because of their imagery or beauty or metaphor.  (And no silly Boom-chas or woo-hoos either!)  I've always loved "You've got to cry without weeping, talk without speaking, scream without raising your voice."  Also, "life should be fragrant, rooftop to the basement".  I know there are others, and I'll add them as I think of them.  What are the phrases that live in your head?

"life should be fragrant..." is one of your favorite lines  :o I wouldn't have guessed  ;)

I'm sure you'll never guess mine:
I can lose myself, you I can't live without  ;)
If I could through myself set your spirit free
Time is a string of pearls
The heart that hurts is a heart that beats
The only pain is to feel nothing at all

some of the best lyrics i've ever heard from any artist:

I was there when they crucified my Lord
I held the scabbard when the soldier drew his sword
I threw the dice when they pierced his side
But I've seen love conquer the great divide

I have many favorites, but this one always speaks to me.

You let me in your heart
And out of my head

My favorite lyrics have actually been used more than once:

She's gonna dream up the world she wants to live in
She's gonna dream out loud
Dream out loud
Dream out loud

And I must be an acrobat
To talk like this
And act like that
And you can dream
So dream out loud

this is kinda of a quirky one but i always loved it

Life through a window
Discoloured pain
Mrs Brown's washing is always the same
I walk the street rain tragicomedy
I'll walk home again to the street melody

OK - my few favorites have to be:

I want to run, I want to hide, I want to tear down the walls that hold me inside

I went out there in search of experience, to taste and to touch, and to feel as much as a man can before he repents

In a little while this hurt will hurt no more, I'll be home          [for both meanings]

Look I gotta go, yeah I'm running out of change, there's a lot of things if I could I'd rearrange

I'm giving you a virtual slap on the wrist, Heartland.  Didn't I distinctly request no woo-hoo-type lyrics?  That includes, but is not limited to ooohhhhs, screams, boom-chas and unintelligible Bongolese.   ;D

If you want to kiss the sky, better learn how to kneel (this was my senior quote  :))

You can dream, so dream out loud

Every artist is a cannibal, every poet is a thief
All kill their inspiration and sing about the grief

the orbit of your hips and
strung out like a guitar

I will sing, sing a new song (okay, not originally Bono's, but still)

And, though not strictly lyrics, this always makes me smile: "Am I bugging you? I don't mean to bug ya...Okay, Edge, play the blues!"

I'm sorry. I just couldn't help myself, because those are so bad! So bad they're good! Right?

I've got a soft spot for "Vertigo": ...Boys play rock 'n' roll/They know that they can't dance/At least they know!

And the simplicity of "Ultraviolet": Baby, baby, baby, light my way.

Actually, all of Achtung Baby and most of Zooropa are my favorite lyrics.  :)

For the first line it sounds more like "Every liar is a cowboy" sometimes.  ;D

In the cool of the night
In the warmth of the breeze
I'll be crawling around
On my hands and knees

Green light, Seven Eleven,
You stop in for a pack of cigarettes.
You don't smoke, don't even want to.

Red lights, grey morning
You stumble out of a hole in the ground.
A vampire or a victim
It depends on who's around.
You used to stay in to watch the adverts
You could lip synch. to the talk shows.
And if you look, you look through me
And when you talk, you talk at me
And when I touch you, you don't feel a thing.

I love the lyrics to Stay.

And the riff that comes after that!!!  Ya gotta turn it up Captain!
