Oh great ocean, oh great sea.

Run to the ocean, run to the sea.

Simple, but beatiful.

'The worst of us are a long drawn-out confession
The best of us are geniuses of compression'

'We are people borne of sound, the songs are in our eyes, gonna wear them like a crown'

'we run like a river to the sea'

'midnight is where the day begins'

Miracle Drugs..'freedom has a scent, like the top of a newborn babies head..'
Man and a woman..'what the soul wants the soul waits..'
The whole of 'Running to a stanstill'
The imagery on 'Cedars of Lebanon'..everyday things like 'picture on the fridge'..merged with comaprisons of friends and enemies.

Mind you there has to be lots of great lyrics to make up for the lyrics from Elevation..'a mole living in a hole ..'
Mind you ,live Elevation works just fine.

People need to realise that lyrics are sung..that when they are just said then lets face you could pull any song/lyric writer apart..and thats all of them..

KIAORA TO U ALL( thats a greeting Maori by the way)

There are so many... And this new album adds a whole lot of new ones to an already full book. I've been thinking whether "White as Snow" might be overall the best thing Bono has ever written... Too many great lines in this song, but the following:

As boys we would go hunting in the woods
To sleep the night shooting out the stars
Now the wolves are every passing stranger
Every face we cannot know
If only a heart could be as white as snow

This is just too much. "The wolves are every passing stranger" might be the most tremendous thing he has ever written. I wonder, though, if someone really feels that way, how can any hope remain?

the piece from 'White as snow' also has the singular most haunting and powerful use of Bono's voice when he opens it up to sing 'sleep the night shooting out the stars '

Just remembered this one from "Tick Tock":

"We thought that we had the answers, it was the questions we had wrong."

Right from the beginning, Bono surely had a way with words...

See the sunrise over her skin
Don't change it.
See the sunrise over her skin
Dawn changes everything, everything.
And the delta sun
Burns bright and violent.

Mississippi and the cotton wool heat
Sixty-six - a highway speaks
Of deserts dry
Of cool green valleys
Gold and silver veins
All the shining cities
In this heartland
In this heartland
In this heartland.
Heaven knows
This is a heartland.
Heartland, our heartland.

See the sunrise over her skin
She feels like water in my hand
Freeway, like a river
Cuts through this land
Into the side of love
Like a burning spear
And the poison rain
Like dirty tears
Through the ghostranch hills
Death Valley waters
In the towers of steel
Belief goes on and on
In this heartland
In this heartland
In this heartland
Heaven knows
This is a heartland

its said that a river
Finds the way to the sea
And like the river
You shall come to me
Beyond the borders
And the thirsty lands
You say that as a river
Like a river...
Love shall come
Love...
And Im not able to pray anymore
And I cannot hope in love anymore
And I cannot wait for love anymore

He Said He Painted Billboards

« Reply #159 on: March 13, 2009, 11:52:50 AM »

He said he was an artist
but he really painted Billboards
In large capital letters

Always reminds me of the silly things we say we do when we first meet someone. Trying to be more than we are but essentially not far from the truth. In '87 seemed natural but I think if he wrote it now it would seem trite and it wouldn't hit the same chord with me now

You say
Love is a temple
Love a higher law
Love is a temple
Love the higher law
You ask me to enter
But then you make me crawl
And I cant be holding on
To what you got
When all you got is hurt"

Sweet the sin
But the bitter taste in my mouth
I see seven towers
But I only see one way out

You say you;ll give me
Eyes in a moon of blindness
A river in a time of dryness
A harbour in the tempest

Between the horses of love and lust we are trampled...underfoot - the delivery is superb too.

We wait all day for night to come
And its comes like a hunter, child

In my dreams I was drowning my sorrows
By my sorrows they learned to swim

I like to think that this means that some day I will understand why things in my life occurred the way they did!

I was speeding on the subway
Through the stations of the cross
Every eye looking every other way
Counting down ’til the pain will stop

Thought this was beautiful.

To lose along the way the spark that set the flame
To flicker and to fade on this, the longest day

It was written in 1984 but it could be read as a premonition and a perfect summation of the 2000-2007 period...
