In the ocean cuts ring deep, the sky
Like there, I don't know why
In the forest there's a clearing
i run there toward the light...
to lose along the way the spark that set the flame
(Indian Summer Sky)
If I could throw this lifeless lifeline to the wind
Leave this heart of clay, see you walk, walk away
Into the night, and through the rain
Into the half light and through the flame
(Bad)
Take my hand
I know I'll be there if I can
I'll cross the sky for your love
(Drowning Man)
Nothing Changes on New Year's Day
We turn away to face the cold, enduring chill
As the day begs the night for mercy
Your sun so bright it leaves no shadows, only scars
(One Tree Hill)
I have spoke with the tongues of angels
I have held the hand of the devil
(ISHFWILF)
WHat you don't have you don't need it now
You don't need it now, you don't need it now
(Beautiful Day)

This last page on the thread is particularly impressive. Bono really is one of the greatest rock lyricists ever, and the few times when he has messed up cannot take that away.
I agree...just looking over this thread, I'm struck by how many amazing lyrics Bono has come out with. Every post makes me think, "oh yeah, that's a great one too!" I think one of the things that makes Bono so great as a lyricist is that he's willing to create lyrics from a deep place in himself, but at the same time, he doesn't take himself too seriously. I know a lot of people might beg to differ, but what I mean is, he does come out with some clunker lyrics at times, and he knows it, and he just lets it happen because it's not such a big deal, and it's worth it - because the good stuff comes from the same place.
Or, to put that sentiment another way...
"If you want to kiss the sky, better learn how to kneel. (On your knees, boy!)"
Another fave:
"It's not why you're running,
it's where you're going
it's not what you're dreaming
but what you're going to do
It's not where you're born,
it's where you belong
It's not how weak, but what will make you strong"

Oh and while we're at it:
"You are my air, but I need the ground to kneel upon."
Sorry if any of these have been posted already - haven't read the whole thread! I suppose they're all worth posting again, though!

I've always just taken that to be about appreciating what you have in the moment, instead of wasting your time worrying about what you don't have, or wishing for things you don't really need, because it's time you can never get back. Or maybe it's just about loving yourself as you are...

Yeah, I've generally taken it as that as well.

Yeah, I've generally taken it as that as well.
and it's on an album titled ALL THAT YOU CAN'T LEAVE BEHIND. it's the purest essence of the album. U2 were stripping the electronica from their music and the irony from their stage show and were producing bare bones U2 music. They were moving forward with the basics, the essential U2. The message is to appreciate what you have, stop worrying about all the things you don't have, and feel comfortable in your own skin.
as good as these lyrics are, they wouldn't make sense on Pop or Zooropa.

don't know if anyone's mentioned this one but it gets me hot and bothered (a little
)
We're wounded by fear
Injured in doubt
I can lose myself
You I can't live without

"The city walls are all come down
The dust a smoke screen all around
See faces ploughed like fields that once
Gave no resistance.
And we live by the side of the road
On the side of a hill as the valleys explode
Dislocated, suffocated
The land grows weary of it's own."
-A Sort of Homecoming
"You're taking steps that make you feel dizzy
Then you learn to like the way it feels.
You hurt yourself, you hurt your lover
Then you discover
What you thought was freedom is just greed."
-Gone
"And if you look, you look through me
And when you talk, you talk at me
And when I touch you, you don't feel a thing."
-Stay
"We fight all the time
You and I, that's alright
We're the same soul
I don't need, I don't need to hear you say
That if we weren't so alike
You'd like me a whole lot more"
-Sometimes You Can't Make It On Your Own
"Sunrise like a nosebleed, your head hurts and you can't breathe,
You been trying to throw your arms around the world."
-Tryin' to Throw Your Arms Around the World
"You've got to cry without weeping,
Talk without speaking,
Scream without raising your voice"
-Running to Stand Still
"We thought that we had the answers,
It was the questions we had wrong."
-11 O'clock Tick Tock
Just a few of mine... I'm sure there are others floating around my cranium haha
