It's not real German.  It's just Bongolese. If you listen to live performances, he still sings nonsense syllables but they don't match what's on the album.

But isn't Bono supposed to be rather weak in Gaelic? He failed an exam at school, if I'm recalling it right (it's mentioned on "U2 by U2").

I have to dig that track up and listen.

He failed Irish in his state exam but he still has a level of the language.

He accempted an award some years ago supported by the Irish Milk Council. His speech was:

"Bainne chun ithe, Bainne chun ól, Bainne chun rock 'n' roll" (milk to eat, milk to drink, milk to rock and roll - it rhymes in Irish!!)

Well, "An Cat Dubh" is "The Black Cat" in Gaelic, so he must know some Gaelic, being an Irish Dub and all. I think it's just nonsense at the end of "Another Time, Another Place", though.

I have read several other sites with this same question and no one can ever come up with an answer.  I always thought it was German, but the German speakers say that it isn't.    On the different websites I checked for lyrics it says: "Gaelic" which we know it isn't, a few other websites say "Foreign content" and some just leave that part out entirely.

I have a "theory". I remember reading in the book "U2 Into the Heart, the stories behind every U2 song" about the period of time that Bono, Edge and Larry spent in the Shalom Charismatic Christian community.  Bono talks about  speaking/singing in tongues.  Here from Page 43 "At the height of his involvement in charismatic christianity,Bono had been experimenting with the the experience of speaking in tongues within the Shalom group.  The feeling is that some other force takes over, that the rational checks we normally impose are abandoned, that your voice disappears into another voice and that some external power is speaking through you.  Bono would search for that higher state, improvising lyrics on the microphone, allowing the words, the feeling- at its best the ecstasy- to take hold."

So I have a suspicion that "Bongolese" is actually speaking/singing in tongues.

I don't think it is German or Irish.  Sounds like English slurred together in fragments of sentences-- Bonolese.
I gave a try at this....Here's what I picked up by listening to the song-
child'slungs
I.... my eye...
....
she's so beauti....
he's....
he's getting high...she is get..........

Who knows???!!!! I really don't.

On the live version I picked up the following..
look at her
she's your mother
I look at her
hes your son

Someone with better listening skills needs to decipher.
