Lines that "ruin" a song for you
« on: December 11, 2008, 11:51:57 PM »
I can think of a few U2 songs where I mostly like the song, but 1 line almost ruins it for me.  Without those lines I think I would like these songs a whole lot more.  Examples:

Kite is a wonderful song, but "The last of the rock stars..." is such a throwaway line.  It is such an amazing and emotional song, except the last line doesn't fit in at all with the rest of the lyrics and the song ends sort of feeling flat to me.

MOFO - awesome bass line, but for some reason the Mother Sucking Rock and Roll never quite worked for me.  I wasn't sure if they were trying to censor themselves or be sly or what, but it didn't work for me.  Either come out and say it or change the lyrics entirely to get around it completely and try a different approach.  On one hand I sort of agree with VladTheFlyingLemon's earlier comments on this song on a different thread - they shouldn't swear just to swear and if they did all over the place here that would be "throwaway".  On the other hand, Bono isn't afraid to drop the f-bomb (Wake up Dead man, the Grammies, F-the revolution), but here he seems to avoid it and I am not sure why.

Any thoughts on these or examples of your own?

Yeah, the last part of Kite ruins it for me.

The lyrics of Grace ruin the whole song.

I'm going to come back to this ...

On Wire, which otherwise is magnificent, does Bono actually sing "be on the boat side"? That would qualify for me.

And on The Playboy Mansion (which I like otherwise), does he scat-sing, "The Play Dough Mansion"? That would also qualify.

"I'm only asking but I think you know" from The Unforgettable Fire makes no sense to me. Same with "don't push me too far tonight" from that song.

"Have another grape" from Numb doesn't really make any sense.

"Loosey" or "You'll see" from A Man and a Woman, nonsense.

There may be others ...

The air was heavy, heavy as a truck

I used to think in Hawkmoon he was saying "like a soup stain" instead of "like a sheet stain" and that kinda threw me off.

I don't even listen to Wild Honey or Grace, the lyrics are so bad.

Like others have said, I'm sure there's more out there.

I disagree with that completely. I love the end of Kite, it's Bono trying to explain what he's been trying to do in his life. Don't know why so many people say this. Throwaway line - don't think so.

Don't know why, but the "air is heavy/heavy as a truck" line in Electrical Storm doesn't bother me. It's ... descriptive. :)

More:

Miami ... my mammy

A mole digging in a hole

Beauty plays the clown

Hot as a handbag and a can of mace

Your legs were crossed, your arms wide open (er, what?)

If you don't know, Electric Co.

Also ... I wish Bono had figured out the whole "Checkmated/hours of fun/showman in yeah yeah..." bit on Vertigo. Not even he seems to believe those are the actual words.

Important note: None of these lines actually "ruin" a song for me. I just think they're kind of ... in need of a rewrite.

Ouch, zooey. You just dissed two favorites of mine :( But I can understand where you (& a lot of others) are coming from.  Sometimes I love a bad lyric because it is bad! You know, it's so bad, it's good-like mole digging in a hole! You gotta love it. Does that make any sense?   I can't believe I just said dissed. Talk about bad :D

Can I add a non-U2 one that really bothers me?  That song "Lightning Crashes" by Live with the lyric "Her placenta falls to the floor".  Eww... I don't need that visual in a song  :P

Ok we can return to the topic now  :)

Sometimes the visual in your head can really throw you out of the song!

Does redundancy count?

"I'm wide awake/I'm not sleeping"

"Lights go down/It's dark"

I guess Bono's just reinforcing the ideas there .... ???
