'from the womb/my first cry/it was a joyful noise.' - what?

'my father is a rich man/he wears a rich mans cloak/gave me the keys to his kingdom/gave me a cup of gold - OK, i understand he's speaking metaphorically, but his dad worked in a post office...

I think Bono's problem is he's not articulate enough for his intelligence. He has an incredible mind, and is really deep, even philosophical, but generally he just can't communicate it. I'll be fair though, SOMETIMES, he does get it spot on.

I still love the music though, and Bono too  ;D

I believe both lines have reference points in the Bible, rather than purely personal. I think.

In the The First Time, I think the lyrics are a biblical mix, they are about the gifts god gives you and how you throw away those gifts ala The Prodigal Son

"Make a joyful noise unto the Lord, all the earth: make a
loud noise, and rejoice, and sing praise."

And on The Playboy Mansion (which I like otherwise), does he scat-sing, "The Play Dough Mansion"? That would also qualify.

that.
Hmm.  I'll have to relisten.  I Googled and see there were zero posts online suggesting  that.

Oh there are so many but none more so than "freedom has a scent like the top of a newborn baby's head"

I love that line about the scent of the baby's head.  I've had three babies and they definitely have a certain scent.  Lovely image.

surprised no one mentioned this one

I was of a feeling it was out of control
I had the opinion it was out of control

I love this song but just can't ever listen to the album version.
Cleary bono thought it was ridiculous too which is why he never sings it like the album version

Lay down
Lay down
Lay your sweet lovely on the ground
Lay your love on the track
We're gonna break the monster's back

eeeeesh....good news is after this part the song really gets good

A little uptight
You're a baby's fist
Butterfly kisses up and down your wrist
When you see daddy coming
You're licking your lip
Nails bitten down to the quick

still enjoy all 3 songs though

Any of the Unkown Caller lyrics are truly awful.

Fave lyric:

'Carnival
The wheels fly and the colors spin
Through alcohol,
Red wine that punctures the skin
Face to face
In a dry and waterless place'

Sublime!!!!!

TUF probably the best lyrics U2 have done I think.

I always thought the lyric was "throughout the hall" not through alcohol.

The lyrics of Get on your boots.

I don't wanna talk about the wars between the nations . . . At least right now

(I find it as Bono's most smug self-aware lyric)

Until the End of the World:
"Last time we met it was a low-lit room
We were as close together as a bride and groom."

I don't know why but those lines sound to me like it they were written by a 15-year old high school kid writing his first song.

Otherwise, it's a cool song.
