U2 couldn't be bothered to use 'W' as their band name so they decided to just add a 'U' and a '2' to their name instead

That's what I've heard: 1)they made a list of possible names and this was the one they least argued about. 2)the form for social welfare in Ireland is labeled "U2".
Don't know anything for sure, though.

Yep, sure is SG. Used to work in the Social Welfare office many moons ago! Wow - what a coincidence! Well I learn something new everyday. That is a good thing. As far as the name U2 goes., I really don't think it has anything to do with the spy plane. I think they did just throw around some names and that one seemed to work best for them. I am sure someone will correct me if I am wrong.

it's just a quick way of confirming that a friend or someone you know likes the same music. You simply point to the album,CD, Download and say or text - You Too? -or- I just got the new album..You too?

I read a quote, from Adam I think, a long time ago and he said that the band, like the spy plane, uses stealth to cross borders. He didn't mean national borders but borders within music and between people. I don't know if that was true when they named themselves U2, but it's a good answer!!

Youtube was taken already so the band opted for this similar abbreviation.

From Wikipedia: Steve Averill, a punk rock musician and family friend of Clayton's, had suggested six potential names from which the band chose "U2" for its ambiguity and open-ended interpretations, and because it was the name that they disliked the least. It means nothing.

(bolded part)---> Good to know that they really never got stuck on it, eh?
