This much I know.  The band chose the name U2 after the US Spyplane that was shot down by the Soviet Union in the early 60's.  The US got the pilot back BTW.

U2 means the biggest and best band in the whole world who has more than 400 million fans worlwide, has sold over 160 million albums, has done more 6 tours worldwide, love for each other, the only band who has more grammy's than anyone else, and they are still together since September 25, 1976 with no "former members".  Smiley

Would Sept. 25, 1976 be when the officially became U2 and Dick Evans left? Because that sounds a bit early for my memory. There were a few more than just the four we know for a while when they first got together...I think about 7 people total? Which quickly became Larry, Adam, David (Edge), Paul (Bono), and Dick (Edge's brother) once the others were whittled out. Undecided

Hope this works. I've never tried posting a photo before. I was at the Air and Space Museum not too long ago and took a pic of this. The name U2 comes from this incident.

They were given a list of potential band names and U2 was the least offensive choice.  It wasn't until afterward that Bono realized the associations, like the spy plane.  It's in U2 by U2, I think.

its the only name that includes all of us.  You, Too are U2.  so cerebral yet so ludicrously simple!  and just imagine all the other awesomely dorky names our boys could be...gotta love it!
