It's a great album. Released just two years after 'War'. The classic songs are 'A Sort of Homecoming', 'Pride', 'The Unforgettable Fire' and 'Bad'. But 'Wire', 'Prominance', 'Indian Summer Sky' & 'Elvis Presley in New York' are also good songs. Only '4th of July' leaves me cold.

Without TUF there never would have been JT- Edge

« Reply #16 on: October 18, 2008, 03:23:32 PM »

Welcome Back TUF Worship Thread!
A masterpiece that is the transition genius point on the way to Joshua Tree.
Any piece of work that has Bad on it - the best song EVER written - has to be given the credit and complete worship that it deserves.
Without TUF, the boys may not have ever gotten to JT which got them to AB - etc... so it is pivotal and crucial to U2's development as the greatest band in the universe.  If you listen to it in its completeness, you can hear the greatness to come and it is beautiful because you now know the music that came after it but try to listen to it and not think about what comes next. Its impossible. If you remove TUF the pieces that follow all fall apart.
Hope that makes sense to others.
It does to me and this is TUF Worship thread afterall.
Peace

2 years? 1 year if i'm not mistaken. War - 83, Uf - 84, right? I think that's right.

I guess I missed the first thread on this.  I thought I was alone out there.

Oh, no! Quite the contrary, as you can see, there's ALOT of U2 fans who love/like TUF. So you're not alone.  Wink

Released just two years after 'War'.

Umm, TUF was released the next year, 1984, after "War" was released in 1983. Don't worry, though. Sometimes I make the same mistake. Smiley

Only '4th of July' leaves me cold.

Which leads me to question: Why doesn't anyone like 4th of July? I'm not complaining, I'm just taken aback at how many people don't like like. I happen to like it, and I maybe the only one who does.  Sad

I think "4th of July" fits in great with the album which just flows and fits together better than any other U2 album.

But taken on it's own, "4th of July" doesn't really stand up.  A repetitive non-lyrical piece isn't really what you want when just listening to U2 songs.

Just checked my CD cover, yes it was released in 1984. Just a year after 'War'. They also did a lot of touring after 'War'. So to release something as good as TUF so quickly is amazing.

It was recorded during the sessions of TUF, along with The Three Sunrises, another all time favorite b-side of mine.

So it was left off the album?  Amazing!  Such an awesome song and it would fit the album so well I think.

Yeah, Three Sunrises is good also.

Yeah, Three Sunrises is good also.

I think so too. It sounds just as atmoshperic as Bad and TUF song. Maybe it didn't fit cause it sounded too droned to the band? IDK.

Three Sunrises is awesome. Grin

I love this song to no end, i can not get enough of it actually.

Wow. So I AM not the only one!  Grin

It kinda sounds like an intro to Bad. So cool!  Smiley

It gets stuck in my head whenever I hear it.

TUF is definitely a favorite of mine and currently ranks in my top three U2 albums. I'll admit that it took a few years to really "hit" me but one day I was listening to it and suddenly everything clicked. It's magical. Grin

I'm beating my head against the wall for not buying it the other day... It was in a used CD shop for $2! And I actually talked myself out of it! *hangs head in shame*

4th July - it fits with all the Eno stuff going on there - just like Elvis Presley - for me the album was a brave step from three excellent albums but like all great bands and organisations they were not scared to re-invent themselves.
