When I Look At The World: "People find all kinds of things that bring them to their knees"
Wave Of Sorrow: "Nobility on its knees"
Please: "Get up off your knees"
Mysterious Ways: "On your knees boy"
Moment Of Surrender: "I folded to my knees"

That's all I can think of right now without checking.

Whenever I hear "on your knees" the first thing that I think of is someone praying.

The first thing that I think of is surrender, or someone being forced to their knees.

thanks for the help, kitty kat. There is an essay floating around in my head pertaining to that phrase.....kneeling in prayer, subjucation, devastation......how well the Irish know of these......will work on it. Thanks again.

Life does indeed force you to your knees in despair sometimes.  Sometimes that moment of despair (of surrender?) is the most likely time you will also be reaching out to God in prayer.  Anne Lamott writes that the only two prayers she knows are "Thank you, thank you!" and "Help me, help me!"

Well, Bono's lyrics often carry double meanings, don't they?

Ain't that the truth.
You have to also consider the line right before it as well:
"If you want to kiss the sky"

I always took that as 'getting to Heaven'.

My brother always has a good laugh when the line, "On your knees, boy!", kicks in.  ::)

First thing i think about when I hear the phrase "on your knees" is HTDAAB! Lots of knees, or kneeling imagery on that record.
