All good interpretations.  This is one of my favorite U2 songs, lyrically.  To me, it is a double-meaning.  It is about love, sure , but it's also about the IRA, as yamyam mentioned.  The things people will do in the name of love can include violence and hateful acts.  Your "love" can blind you to what is right.

I think he means that if you love somebody so much, you can become blind to their true character.  He loves someone, but cant accept the fact that they have a flawed character, which is the dont want to see part.
thats what it means to me...... it happened to me more than once Embarrassed

Yeah,Bono asked him to play it over and over, and he is usually gently with guitar, but in that solo, his strings would always broke.

wonderfully said.  a lot of this song is double-edged: it can relate to physical love being blinding to seeing the truth about someone, but it has a bigger meaning: love in the name of ideas can blind you to seeing what your "love" is doing to others.  one man's love, another man's misery.  bono reiterates this in Please: "love is big and love is tough but love is not what you're thinking of."  finding TRUE love, the love of each other, selfless love, will do away with the blindness.  i think bono's telling us that as long as we can't see this truth, love will always be blindness for us.

"Love is blindness, I don't want to see . . . "

If you're in love with someone, and the relationship is less than healthy, it's easy to choose to stay blind to preserve the relationship . . . to ignore the problems and hope they'll go away, or think that if you just try hard enough it will work out.  You can see the relationship self-destructing, but not be able to admit it.

I agree. i always thought the lyric referred to the problems and eventual break down of The Edge's first marriage

That's the real beauty of Bono's lyrics - they are so layered and "about" so many things.  Love, sex, politics, world events, spirituality, God - they all come together - just like they do in our "real" lives.  I think that's a huge reason I am so drawn to the songs - they are real, about real things that really matter to me, in a truly unique way.

This is a song about terror and a terror-attack, like others mentioned before, the IRA. I think the love Bono sings about is the love for God which makes people blind and makes people do things that are in fact evil. Maybe the same kind of love Bono sings about in "Exit"; "So hands that build / Can also pull down / The hands of love."

I think there's a layer in there about prostitution and the commercialization of love.

I agree, these songs both reference psychotic, fanatical "love" that actually drives people to committing evil acts. Love is Blindness does have a ton of other layers in it, in addition to the terrorist angle, where Exit is a lot more specific about a crazy stalker.

Isn't Exit about a guy who killed someone and has to leave his girl and everything?

Exit is about Gary Gilmore. It is one of the darker U2 songs. I mentioned this in another thread.  I read that Bono doesn't sing it live because the stalker who killed the actress Rebecca Shaefer supposedly listened to this song before he did it. I am not sure how true the second part is.

See, I see it as being much, MUCH more personal- intensely personal, rather than about a wider issue.
