The song I picked was Bad. Shocker right? It has a personal meaning for me which is why I chose it and that's the most importent part of a poem. It doesn't matter what it means to everybody else but what it means to you.

good choice.  it's so difficult to pick a great lyrical piece, since pretty much everything is amazing poetry! just listen real hard to pop and achtung..amazing lyrics!  of course, for me Running to Standstill is quite possibly the most beautiful lyric ever written, but thats just me.  we've all got our own favorites because each song CAN mean something to everyone! the best poetry is the poetry that transcends its original intentions while still carrying them.  U2, in 90% of their music, has always done this.

If I could only pick one, I'd say "Miss Sarajevo."

Runners-up (without an order determined): "Your Blue Room," "The Wanderer," "Heartland," "Dirty Day," "Lemon," "One Tree Hill," "The Fly," "Until the End of the World," "Stay (Faraway, So Close!)," "White as Snow"

And I'm seconding the previous poster who said that 1987-1997 were Bono's golden years as a poet.

I agree 100 percent!
There are so many already listed here, but  Stay & Running to Stand Still do stand out in my mind as well.  I am also going to add Mothers of the Disappeared.

If Bono wrote the lyrics on "Miss Sarajevo" that Pavarotti sings, then those may be his most poetic. The rest of that little ditty ain't bad either.

You say that the river
finds the way to the sea
and like the river
you will come to me
beyond the borders
and the dry lands
You say that like a river
like a river...
the love will come
the love...
And i don't know how to pray anymore
and in love i don't know how to hope anymore
and for that love i don't know how to wait anymore

Some of my favorite lines are in Acrobat:

"And I'd join the movement
If there was one I could believe in
Yeah, I'd break bread and wine
If there was a church I could receive in."

The whole song Winter

im not saying its their best, but poetic.  Its lyrics illustrate the whole scene around them, they have a mixing of intrusments, experimentation, and the deep octaves Ohs...

"The Fly" contains my favorite poetic line..."Every artist is a cannibal, every poet is a thief...All kill their inspiration, and sing about their grief" - I love the irony.

So true!
