I just watched the MTV Europe Awards...the band got a lot of exposure with it...playing a number of tunes.

Then the band won Best Live Act at the show. The whole band appeared on stage and gave some very tiresome soundbites. But I was particularly struck by Larry Mullen, who thanked MTV...and went on to say how MTV were still relevant and important.

This I think represents a major problem with the band at the moment...they seem to pander to virtually anyone who will give them a stage...Obama, Blackberry, MTV...whoever.

I dont have much of a problem with this...when it comes to either Obama or Blackberry (just as examples)...but the fact is MTV hasnt done anything for music in years...and co no way be called relevant.

Its one thing for Bono to B.S....but one would expect better from Larry Mullen. Hes usually the cool customer who just stays shut up.

Could it be, that the business mind behind this band has gone a little too far?

(and I always respected them for their business)

True. That comment did strike me as odd coming from Larry. I'd expect it from Bono. But, is MTV better in Europe? Maybe they are still 'relevant' there? Hard to believe. MTV are incredibly lame in the U.S.

I hate MTV. And how stupid was it to put up a temporary wall around the performance area to keep people out from celebrating the tearing down of the wall??? I would have loved for people to tear it down! U2 should have demanded that it be taken down or decline the award. I love U2, they are my favorite, but they kissed MTV's soiled backside if you ask me.

Maybe Larry enjoys shows like My Super Sweet 16 and The Real World.  Cheesy Grin

Maybe Larry was referring to MTV Europe which IMO is better and more relevant the US MTV. Didn't Bono and The Edge give a an interview awhile back alluding to the same thing?

I'm guessing he meant MTV Europe too, since he WAS at their awards, if it had been at the MTV Video Music Awards, which is U.S.-based, I would have been more worried.  Smiley

I missed Larry saying that but its surprising unless they're better than the US & Canada.

@ Mr.BonorFLYd - I disagree about the wall and the controversy is overblown.  Its not stupid, it makes perfect sense.  Although its ironic, its more than likely for fan safety & probably also due to city policies, permits and city budgeting.   You can't have a band like U2 play free outdoors and flood the streets with fans, which would easily be huge, and not provide both traffic control, extra security and policing.  That'd be pretty expensive & risky for 6 songs.

I know - I couldn't believe they copped flak for that in the press, it's bloody ridiculous! It was ironic as you said, but it was clearly there for safety and infrastructure reasons.

In Europe they actually play music videos and not all the reality shows that they show in North America.

I understand, hmm...I'm not in security, but they couldn't have come up with anything else besides a wall? It sounds ridiculous and disrespectful. I don't blame U2 so much as I blame MTV. But, I don't much like Larry kissing their backsides either.
