If the gig violated rules then it's only fair that they were fined. I don't think that because you live near a stadium you should suck it up if anybody breaks the rules regarding noise levels. To say you can't complain if you live near a stadium is completely missing the point.

Disagee entirely. How many nights have U2 played in Croke Park and 'broke the rules' over the course of the amount of days/nights someone lives near the stadium. You can count it on one hand! Jeez come on, it was loud a couple of nights, you miss a couple of hours sleep - how life threatening. This is just another excuse for some Irish non-U2 fans (and there are many of them and its ok to be Irish and not a fan) to have a go at the band beacuse they are either jealous or just plain pissed at the band for being so successful.

Well all I can say is that if there are laws in place and you break those laws, you should have to pay a fine. I know it was probably a pretty minor inconvenience, but it seems the crew broke guidelines so they should have to pay compensation. I don't think it's people being pissed at the band at all. It's very easy for us to say they're making a fuss over nothing. I fail to see how it's ridiculous that somebody is fined for breaking the law/conditions of contract or whatever they did.

But it's U2. To be critical in any way shape or form for anything they do is frowned upon here.

Are you saying that u2 should be

a. Above the law or
b. Above certain laws only

I can now believe that some people believe that U2 is omnipotent! I think this person will choose both answers. And if we snitch then we will sleeping with fishes or have a horse's head in our bed. The point is a law was broken and the fine is a drop in a bucket for them ($56,000 USD). ;-]

I agree with this ^ and don't think its sour grapes etc on the part of the neighbors.  Laws are laws and U2 likely have a fund set aside for this and any other noise and curfew infractions & for any city.  While the neighbors should expect increased noise & traffic from concerts and events at the stadium and its surrounding areas, going beyond curfew and the all night deconstruction of the Claw is more than disruptive.  Some residents have to work the next day.  I'm sure they slap fines on other bands and events too, and its not just for the 3 nights that U2 played but year round.

What exactly is "the law"?  What exactly is "too loud"?  Loud enough that X number of people complain?  How on earth does one prepare themselves for not breaking a law that is really just an arbitrary number?

And they did pay the fine, I don't recall anyone saying they thought they were "above the law".  Don't be ridiculous.

I don't have access to th elocal ordinances and by-laws ? So they paid $36,000 and didn't break any local laws, ordinances, by-laws ?

Given how many peopl ehere are saying how 'unfairly' they're being treated ?

Don't be ridiculous yourself

for violating noise levels.  (from atu2)

i think this is ridiculous

You'd think a band who are only motivated by $ would simply turn the volume down and keep the $70,000 in their pocket.

I think about it this way, U2 had to pay to fit the claw in the stadium, and had to end early because of a curfew

Its a ROCK CONCERT!  Tens of thousands of people play to get in, and they are getting fined for playing too loud? its a ROCK CONCERT!

i thought that rule only applied for say blasting music from you house disturbing others

You buy a house next to a stadium, guess what is going to happen

Seriously, people need to chill.  How can someone live near Croker and not appreciate all that U2 has done for the Irish economy?

*Or maybe I'm wrong - never been to Ireland Embarrassed*

Neither have I ElJay, but yes you would think it be ok for a few days. I just crack up because I remember reading
something about U2 back in the late 70's whereever they practiced and they were getting in trouble for being loud.
They still are all these years later. Cheesy
