Sometimes its better to be regarded as a fool than to open your mouth (or type) and remove all doubt. Showing how free your speech can be is a given. The real question will always be whether or not anyone wants to listen.

Well you have the freedom not to listen or react. It's like those people who complain about horrorfilms. Juts change the channel. But this is U2 one of my favourite bands since I was a kid. And I really hate to see the decline. I'm passionate about that. I hate it that they make very bland music. It makes me breathe smoke

Just some advice.....

Start a thread along those lines, espousing your views (in detail) on why U2 has declined. Maybe you'll actually get people wanting to discuss that with you, instead of wondering why you've jumped into a thread that has nothing to do with your opinion of their decline.

None of them

Dude this is why people get tired of your posts, what's the point in even saying that? If the song doesn't interest you, why even comment on it?
Freedom of speech my brother and yes that song sucks as does the album.

I don't know if freedom of speech is protected on a forum that has rules on what can't be said dude.
Anyways back on topic..
I pretty much like all the versions of this song, awesome song off of an awesome album. A hidden gem according to U2

a hidden gem according to u2, but since when did their opinion matter on what made a great song? they think all of pop is cr*p! i personally don't like this "type" of u2 song. it's not bad, i like the single version. a bit too sickly sweet imho.

well in my opinion most of pop is crap  Undecided but we all have our opinions so thats what makes a forum great! Also my hidden gem according to U2 is a combo of the Live in Chicago speech and the post grammy speeches.

In my opinion, Pop is complete cr*p except for Gone, LNOE, and Staring at the Sun..but Original of the Species is in my top 5.

well, that's u2 for you ain't it? some of us like the experimental, rougher, non-conventional sounding u2 of the 90's (and parts of no line), whilst others prefer the conventional, middle-of-the-road, song writing by numbers u2 of the htdaab/atyclb era. so i don't think original of the species is crap, it just doesn't excite me that much. sorry Smiley

miami is exactly right. Some people like the trendy, flashy, hipster side. The frosting, shall we say. While others gravitate to the old fashioned notion that great songs are all that really matters.

I'm happy to say I don't fall on either side of this experimentation v conventional songwriting divide. Sometimes I listen to Pop for its thematic complexity and the general undertone of despair and frustration. It's a very moody record. And sometimes I want to listen to ATYCLB or Bomb, because they're more direct and personal. I wouldn't want to not listen to either type. I think that's why NLOTH appeals to me, it's a good balance between songwriting and experimentation so I'm nearly always in the mood to listen to it.

+1 no need to say sorry Miami... thats the beauty of the forum one person says something, people either agree or disagree. You like PoP, I don't. I like Angel of Harlem maybe you don't I don't know. But I thinks its funny that we have really similar forum names  Grin

Toss up Wink
I prefer the Chicago one - raw as.
Its a song that has never struck me as anything special though, a lot of untapped potential trying to be something its not. Would love to hear an acoustic version, quiet, mellow and tender - rather than shouted faux emotion complete with rock band, orchestra aaaaand Lilywhites subtle as a hammer to the head production - ugh!

I agree with this - I think the song would be better with a bit more subtelty, it sounds a bit overblown.
