U-S-A!!!! U-S-A!!!! U-S-A!!!!

« on: November 18, 2009, 09:51:42 PM »

There have been a couple threads asking for our favorite lyrics, most underrated songs, and favorite musice video, so I thought I would make my own spin on things.

What is your favorite "moment" from a U2 song?  A moment can be a lyric, a guitar sound from Edge, a snippet of Larry's drumming, Adam's bass play, a moment in time at a concert, or any other miscellanious sound.  Its hard to explain, but I think you understand where im going with this.

For me, it is such a close race.  The 0:50 mark in City of Blinding Lights is the single greatest sound on the face of the earth.  It can lift me up out of any bad mood and put an ear to ear grin on my face.  18 1/2 year old guy here and I get emotional as a school girl when I hear it, and I have actually teared up when I heard it live.  In close competition, the heartbeat sounding intro of Beautiful Day, including "The heart is a bloom" line gives me a comperable feeling. I can never pick between the two, but if I had to choose, I would have to choose City of Blinding Lights

"oh great ocean, oh great sea, run to the ocean, run to the sea"

or the final melancholy understated riff from edge on wowy along with larry's signature drum fill, it really
encompasses everything about them in that brief moment

"All my life I've been waiting for / this moment I'm in"

Need I say more? ;-)

Other big moments include the bridge at the end of the song "one" with the counter-melodies in the vocal and the guitar, the bang-bang courtesy of Larry Mullen, Jr. after the line "Didn't we bang on the drum?" from "Sweet Fire Of Love", the band crashing in loudly after "it's down to Alphaville" in "New York", the "all that you fashion all that you fame etc." ending of "Walk On" and the special melodic twist towards its end, Luciano P kicking in on the bridge of "Miss Sarajevo",

My, there are so many great moments in their recordings. Just look at what I wrote in the "Favourite Edge sound" thread for more http://forum.atu2.com/index.php/topic,9558.msg467041.html#msg467041

I have two:

1.  "Bad" - Bono has just finished all the verses, and there's an interlude between these and the final "I'm wide awake."  I LOVE this interlude - the part where Edge goes to town, the part he had to play over and over during Live Aid while Bono danced with the girl - and would replay the song from that moment again and again and again if my CD player would cooperate.

2.  "WOWY" - all the singing is done, and Edge is doing his "best part of the JT album" thing, and then Adam's line envelopes the remainder of the song.  I listen to the whole song just to hear the last 20 seconds or so.

i would have to agree with the "WIDE AWWAAAAAKE!!!" scream.  especially live.  of course, for me, WOWY is also one of the highlights...plus when Bono literally cries "october talk getting nowhere, november, december, remember, we just started it again, PLEAAASSE!" in 'please.'

My favorite moment... one I will NEVER forget... came from the Elevation tour I saw in Austin, TX. I heard the intro to Streets and then BOOM when the stage lit up and they blasted into the song, MY MIND WAS BLOWN. I could feel my eyes popping out of my sockets!
I was disappointed this tour they haven't been using the exploding lights during Streets. It was my husband's first U2 concert and I really wanted him to see it like that.

"And if the mountains should crumble/or disappear into the sea/not a tear, no not I"

I will sit in the car if this song is on my CD player just to hear this line, regardless of how badly I need to get inside to use the restroom.  Smiley

:50 in COBL...That is the exact moment I started crying when I saw them in Denver in 2005 which also coincided with confetti falling from the top of the arena ~ amazing!
