in the eighties they did their own thing
in the ninties their was zootv u2 probably the coolest u2
pop u2 for me the most enjoyable
in 2000 they changed again and I really liked it. It was different.
The vertigo tour for the first time had me feeling like I had seen this before.
THe latest tour again had me feeling like I had seen all this before. (the performance rather than the claw.)
Is it time for u2 too shake the u2 tree.
As u2 fans do we need a shock now. I think I do. Everything feels familiar?

They've never been "cool."
Not in the 80's. Not in the 90's. Not in the 00's.

I don't agree. When they reinvented themselves in 1991 with Achtung Baby they were definitely cool. Trabants, shades, Zoo Station - how can that not be cool? Zooropa won a Grammy for best alternative album.

If the measuring stick for "cool" is bands like the Strokes, then, thankfully, U2 remains beautifully uncool.

exactly. It was probably cool to like U2 for a few months in 1980. Since then, they've been decidedly "uncool."

they are definitely uncool. like, way uncool. i can't count how many times people shake their heads at me when i belt U2 songs.
that said, we could certainly do with a continuation down the track NLOTH set us on. another decade of mind twisting, groundbreaking, experimenting new music would be amazing!

I think maybe in some places (maybe Europe?) U2 were cooler in the 90s, like suitoflights said. However, I distinctly remember 1993, 1994, even though I was very young, and remember my older teenage brothers rolling their eyes when "One" would come on. Metallica was their thing.

haha, it's kinda hilarious that people think U2 were cool in the early 90's... ever heard of grunge? just because you might think they were pretty cool like that now doesn't mean it was the general feeling back then.

You cant be cool and the biggest at the same time - the collective public consciousness would simply not allow it.

Isn't there some story about Bono meeting Cobain and Cobain said something to the effect of "You guys are a great pop band"?

Exactly right. Now that is why they really are cool
