Not sure on my U2 facts here, but an 8 month gap? Is this the longest they've ever done? Does it make a new album more likely? Maybe they're not announcing South America dates in anticipation of delays? Maybe i'm just bored.

There was an 8 month break between the 4th and 5th leg of the Vertigo tour.
There was also an 8 month break in the Zoo TV tour, but they managed to release Zooropa during that time and the tour morphed into the Zooropa/Zoomerang tour.
