Title: Do you like "Love is Bigger..."?
Post by: TheOriginal on December 03, 2017, 02:48:13 AM
I'm very curious as to what people think. I'm seeing a huge disparity in reactions on this song - you either love it or hate it. I really don't like it so far (UTU2TM has swayed me a bit) for these reasons:
-"Love is bigger than anything in its way" is a horrible lyric and a horrible title
-It sounds like Coldplay, i.e. it is too poppy
But I can see why people would love it. It's a huge, anthemic song. For me, I just can't get past the lyrics - it's too teenage adolescent for me.

I'm far from hating it (can even enjoy a little), but it's closer to hate than to love.

The song sounds enormous and epic as f..., and that's not a bad thing per se, but I really wish it had better dynamics overall. You hear a bunch of instruments layered one above the other, but they don't seem to really complement each other. And I just wish the rhythmic section (that includes the percussive piano) would be way more interesting than what it is there. Also, and that's even more subjective, I'm not very impressed by the melodies in this one, and the soaring pre-chorus is one of the only parts in SOE that sounds forced and unconvincing to me.

In conclusion, you know what kind of feeling they are going for in this track, very cheesy and cheeky, but they don't take me to that special place despite all the bigness and all the happy chord progression and all the soaring singing. So I'm left with only the cheesiness and nothing to shake my butt to. The bridge is nice, though.

To me, it's a song where Bono is imagining he is talking to his children (and us, for that matter) from the grave.  As a parent myself, I find it heart-wrenching.  After hearing the song the first time or two, I didn't even make that connection at first.  Then I started thinking about the line, "If I could hear myself when I say...", and then I realized he can't hear himself because he's dead.  That just took this song to a whole other level with me.  I almost view it as Kite Part 2, and I love, love, love that song...

Kite part 2 is a good shout. I love it. It's up there with their best and the lyrics are great. Honest and creative I think. It's not easy to be that straightforward when writing lyrics. And the bridge is outstanding. First U2 song I shed tears to on first listen since Ultraviolet.

I neither love nor hate it yet. But LOH is easily their most emotional mortality song since "Kite" for me, not "Love Is Bigger . . ."

to my ears, this is the worst U2 song I've ever heard.

^you see that kind of reaction is perplexing to me lol

I think its a great song, it pulls at my heartstrings or whatever you want to call it. I'd put it as my 3rd favourite track off the album. It's almost quintessential U2, so how can you not appreciate it?

I didn't vote as none of the options applied to me. I am somewhere in the middle of love and hate. I kind of like the grandness of the song but it mostly doesn't work for me.

I think the song is absolutely gorgeous.  Bono is as passionate and yearning as ever, and the instrumentation is almost classical in nature and fits perfectly with the vocals.  Right now it's my favourite song of all time, but it's also brand spanking new.  Once the novelty wears off, though, I can't see it not being in my top 10 favourite songs, and it has a shot at #1.  To me it sounds like One or Stay, only slightly more elegant, without losing any of the passion...  Just breathtaking.

I never thought that at this stage in their career they would write another stone cold classic, but imo, that's exactly what they've done.

LOVE IT. ADORE IT. Itís beautiful, soaring, sentimental, and it brings a tear to my eye.

I love it! Sure it screams U2 but when done right there is absolutely nothing wrong with that.  Great drums and Bono's vocal on the ohhhh pre-choruses is great.  His tone is so rich and love that his voice still has this much power.  Who else can sing like this?  Also I personally don't find the song or lyrics cheesy in any respect.  It's a beautiful thought - love can and will conquer all.  Much like All you need is love (I never hear anyone say the Beatles were cheesy).  Maybe its the time we live in or just u2/bono hate.  The part that starts "if the moon saw crying" is also beautiful.  Whats not to like?

One of the few songs I don't like.

I really dont like it. Sounds like coldplay/imagine dragons trying too hard to be U2....
Like the whole album its brilliantly produced but its a NO for me.

Otherwise im really digging the album.

Love it.  Yeah, I've noticed that it seems to be a pretty polarizing tune among U2 fans.  It elicits the goose bumps for me, in a big way.  My favorite song of the new album.

Ditto. Great album, but this tune is straight from a Disney or romcom soundtrack. Just awful through and through.

This has been one of the few songs I have "struggled" with so far (I love SoE overall very much). There are elements to this song that I really like, but I keep oscillating between thinking this is a fantastic song that will be great live, and, on the other hand, a missed opportunity. There are many elements in the song that I like, but they never fully come together as well as they could have. Seems a bit of a case where the whole is not as good as the sum of its parts. That being said, I am far from hating the song.  In fact, I like it very much and wish it had been more fully realized. Perhaps it will come alive live. Perhaps a guitar solo will be added?

On a side note, I almost feel the album could/should have ended with this track. Then you would have had perfect bookends with Love is all we have left and love is bigger...

^This.  After hearing this song, one of my first thoughts was, "U2 have finally successfully written that Beatles song they've been dying to make all these years" and "All You Need is Love" is the one that came to mind for me, too.  "Original of the Species" was close, but they finally pulled it off here.

This was kind of snuck up on me. It was one I thought was just kind of there at first, but then it was light the switch was flicked suddenly and now I love it.  Definitely one of my new favorites now.

I think itís one of the most amazing, pure things U2 have ever created. Itís not a song with a story or a detailed picture. Itís a song with a message: sing for joy. It doesnít have to be super-deep or have amazing lyrics, because itís neither. Itís a song from someone who came really, really close (going off his accounts) to dying and now wants to make a joyful noise to the Lord (and I say that as an atheist). This song is one of the most pure U2 moments ever. This is the ultimate extension of U2 creating a moment rather than telling a story.

At first really didn't like it, just too formulaic and Coldplay sounding.

But somehow it's managed to sweep me along, and now look forward to it coming on.

I like it; my U2-loving wife does not. She feels the "wah-wah-wooah-wah" synths at the beginning do not sound like anything close to U2. She says it's way too poppy. And I see in the album notes that one of The Chainsmokers played a part in the recording--I'm not surprised in the least. That synth, though, is such an earworm! I've found myself humming that part incessantly the last few days.

Love it.  Didn't at first.  I wonder if being a Christian (of sorts) and having young kids gives me a different perspective on the sentiment expressed...

Can't hear it without tears now.

I am also one who doesn't love it but doesn't hate it either. It's just sort of there. Underwhelming vocally despite the grandeur of the music.

It's nice to know I'm not alone there. I'm stunned anybody thinks this is a good song - but to each their own. Happily deleted it and pray it never gets played live. CRINGE

A few days on, this is the song that I find myself going back to the most.  Initially, it was 'Little Things', then 'Red Flag Day.'  But now it's 'Love is Bigger.'  I catch myself singing and humming this song all day long.

This is definitely a grower for me. At first didn't like the title, the song felt clichťd and formulaic. But the total optimism of it really got me eventually.

Bono's voice in the chorus I can't help but get swept away with. I really like the bridge too. I can understand why it's a bit of a love/hate song.

Its ok but the horns/intro is jarring. Its very Ďtake thatí.

The much-maligned (on this forum at least) "Wild Honey" is very Beatle-esque as well. It is pretty much an album filler type of song, but it does bring the Beatles to my mind when I hear it.

I have often wondered how U2 sounding like themselves ever got to be considered a negative.  I mean, isn't U2's sound/style what drew us to them to begin with?  It's something I have never really understood.

Whenever U2 come up with a lighthearted song with a happy melody people think of Beatles, but Beatles have way more "stylization" and sophistication in their songwriting than something like Wild Honey. The Showman is a lot closer, but I don't even think U2 were going specifically for Beatles there.

And I don't understand how is that filler. I guess when people don't enjoy a genre, it becomes filler.

The only song I skipp every time, for me, it is a mediocre Coldplay song that thinks it is a U2 song, it has all the elements of U2's later work that I do not like. Really takes the entire album down.
I'm also very amazed people like this song so much. Maybe I should just try a little harder and listen to the entire song for once.

One should not have to try so hard to like a song. Should be effortless. I'm with you ; it brings the whole album down its so awful. However, that's easy to fix if you're digital - just delete the song from the running order. Album sounds MUCH improved in its closing without this awful blemish

I saw the live performance of this from Abbey Road and I have to say that it is kinda has some cheap Christian rock sentiment. Although the title itself is brilliant.

It's like U2 doing a (kind of cheesy) musical number. I dont like it that much and I think it's way too obvious and simple in its message - kind of an example of the annoying tendencies that U2 acquired from 2000 onward.

I like the weird sounding electric synthesised voices thingy, but the rest is pure soft nice boring blandness.

This could've been much better.

The first day I heard this album, and the first few times I heard this song, its bridge electrified all the pores of my skin.  That part alone made this an early favorite of mine.

Today, I wouldn't say it's my favorite song from the album, but it's still a song I still quite enjoy.  It's certainly over-the-top, but I don't mind that most of the time.

Guys. For those who are saying it's too cheesy: have you never heard Surrender? Or Drowning Man?

I admit it is a relatively simple tune on a complex album, but it was needed.

It hits me in all the feels, man. It's a show closer, sad yet incredibly uplifting. <Wipes single tear while smiling>
