He is whispering "&*&&$%®&*&*... ofaa the world", that for me, is really far from Haven't seen you in quite a while. Did you have a chance to listen to the Until the End live version from U22, he is clearly singing it...

Northern Sould you didn't quite get the purpose of my question. The official lyric states "Haven't seen you quite a while" but does B actually sing it? Let me know your technique to clearly understand it, because I haven't thru the last 15 years

Then I still don't understand your question.  The first line of the song is "Haven't seen you in quite a while..." and is very obvious when you listen to the song.

I think "I and I in the sky" is a reference to Jah.

My girlfriend still thinks Bono's saying "You put me on Prozac, try to rewind" on NLOTH the track.

for the longest time, that is, up until a few years ago, i didn't know what he said in Stuck, the "I wasn't jumping... for me it was a fall" line. I tend to just ignore the lyric if i can't understand what he said, then i look it up if i can remember to check.

I could never for the life of me hear "But without you it's no use" in When I Look At The World. I thought it was "Pull it up, but it's no use." Every time I looked it up, I would have a revelation and then forget it later.

I could never hear "Intransigence is all around" in Staring At The Sun either. It sounded like "Dreams are juices all around." :P

i hear the intran- word, but i have NO CLUE what that means. it's weird i may as well be hearing the dreams are juices line instead.

HAHA iodine in the sky! makes more sense than "higher nigh in the sky!" which is what it thought it was.

Heartland's Heaven's day i thought it was heaven's gate.

Mofo - meh. i don't think i'll ever NOT hear the "red dress" line. i can't "hear" that it's "been around back" etc.

I once received an email with a video similar to the original here, about English songs that make sense in Spanish!
It turns out that the line
To drag the past out
in One, sounds exactly in Spanish like
Te traigo pasta
(translation: I bring you pasta --as in the Italian dish--)
Actually, there are other lyrics in U2 that sort of make phonetic sense in Spanish.

I think someone was a victim of misheard lyrics with this one: Promenade
In this page and u2.com they write
Oh, tell me, Cherry you dance with me

but in many others the lyric is
Oh, tell me, Charity you dance with me

some others even claim it is
Oh, tell me, tell me you'll dance with me

Which one is correct? To me it sounds like Charity, but then again, I'm not a native English speaker.

Well, the way I see it, if we compare a young face with a field, because the former doesn't have wrinkles yet, it is like a smooth field and it's easier (hence the no resistance part) to plow through it, whereas an old face is like hard, desert-like soil.

Maybe that was what he was thinking when he wrote it in his youth? It still doesn't make much sense to me - It's  even clear to kids that old people's skin looks more plowed through than young people's skin.

"Charity" makes more sense to me...I think it makes more sense if you think of "Charity" as selfless love in general rather than as writing a check. To me, it's beautiful if it's "Charity" and kinda silly if it's "Cherry."

I remember when I was little, listening to One over and over again, and I asked "Mommy, why does Bono have leopard in his head?"  ;D

So what did she say?
Well, she was pregnant with my sister so she was really tired, so she made up something. "Because a trade agreement between Ireland and Leopardia states that all Irish rockstar men must have at least one leopard on their hair." Me: "Well alrighty then?"

chilly - it's WHAT more. i looked it up Saturday actually. AZLyrics.com has it as what more anyways. i guess i could of checked U2.com but they're not really 100% accurate <they listed ATYCLB as being released in 01, it was released in Oct. 00>

About the Cherry/Charity (Promenade) debate, I was listening to it, and to solve this mystery I got up close to the speakers. It's Cherry.
Title: Re: Misheard Lyrics
Post by: reasons40 on July 18, 2014, 12:21:07 PM
Cherry dance/Charity dance (Promenade) --- does it even matter, neither one make any sense??

Another misheard lyric - From 'I Fall Down'. As a fan not originally from that era, I had always come back and listened that one song casually & thought Bono was saying "Judas say something, Judas say you're sorry..." - Guess I was putting extra meaning into that song, based on 90's material.
Title: Re: Misheard Lyrics
Post by: kokedera on July 18, 2014, 05:24:16 PM
It's "charity dance" with me. It's easy to blur into "cherry" as his voice drops after the start of the word, or if you aren't using good headphones, but you should be able to make out the "i" sound separate from the "ty." As for the sense, it's from the poem 'I am of Ireland' by Yeats, from his collection 'The Winding Stair and Other Poems' (not spiral ;) ) - one of the most plundered collections of poetry by the pirates of rock, as you'll find bits lifted by Led Zeppelin, Kate Bush, and Van Morrison in there among others.

To quote a bit:

"'I am of Ireland
And the Holy Land of Ireland
And time runs on,' cried she.
  'Come out of charity,
Come dance with me in Ireland.'" etc. - it's basically the chorus to the poem. And, of course, Yeats lifted it himself apparently from an Olde Englishe pome:

"Icham of Irlaunde
 ant of the holy londe
 of irlaunde,
 gode sire pray ich thee
 for of saynte charite
 come ant daunce wyt me
 in irlaunde."

Anyway, I'd say that's the easier line, and its sense turns on the themes that run through UF & JT. The more difficult line is "an eye like a firework, Erin, explode -- a Roman candle and lightning lights up the sky" -- a line with heaps of sense (provided it's correct ;) ), and perhaps the most important line on the album.

Aha! Not only do we get explanation of the line, but there's something to add to the list of literary references in U2 songs! Fascinating.

I just hear "Eye like a firework, explode" or "I'm like a firework, explode" for the next line mentioned. I just thought it was about literal fireworks.
Title: Re: Misheard Lyrics

Great explanation Kokedera! But now you introduced a new controversy. To me, it was always
and I, like a firework, explode
Title: Re: Misheard Lyrics
Post by: kokedera on July 19, 2014, 03:15:38 PM
And you are free to hear it as you do, and on one level it does make use of the imagery of literal fireworks. Just saying, it's a line you might want to consider may differ from the common transcriptions.

And I probably have said this enough, but does anyone think tracks 5 and 6 on TUF are mixed up? On Promenade: "I like a firework, explode. Roman candle lightning, love!", "Slide show, seaside town, Coca-Cola, fottball radio, radio, radio....". And then they name the next song "4th of July". Suuurrrrrreeeee.

In 1984 Bono didn't know a thing about American culture or traditions. Ironically, two years after that, he could only write about America.

I love the theory, but 4th of July was named after Edge's daughter's birthday... and if it was a mistake it would have most likely been corrected in later copies of the album (like how the running time of One Tree Hill and Exit was later corrected).

Was listening to Rattle and Hum today and remembered one: For the longest time, I thought "She's the dollars" was "She's the goddess" in "Desire".

Wait, it's not Goddess? I'm just going to keep singing it wrong.

At the Charlottesville show, he definitely said "in your bed" instead of head, in One. But I can't remember if he said lepers or Leopards. . Which amuses me every time it comes up on the shuffle.

And, really, the actual lyric is "you act like you've never had love"? ...I still hear "You act like you've never had none, and you want me to go without".

Granted, I sing and hear most lyrics wrong.

Also, the image of Leopards romping around a bed always come into my head when One comes on.

"Since I've read it"

Unfortunately that cuts two ways - people do tend to beLIEve what they read, even when it's blatantly wrong. Can't win your argument? - Publish it and people will believe it. But, they don't actually listen, and even when they listen they don't really hear if you know what I mean. Fortunately, they may be putting all lyric guessers out of business if they keep up the trend they started with Invisible & Ordinary Love: accurate lyrics on U2.com & the album. No matter really, if God or the Devil (you choose which one) is in the details, what I see is fans missing the true details and increasingly getting lost in minutiae to create what? - fan hierarchy? over absurd minutiae? What more glaring example of not hearing is there?

It's because that's a continuation of One:

Stand up comedy:
"Stand up - this is comedy. DNA, lobotomy has left you shmuffukin..."
I tried hard to figure out that last part of the sentence, the closest I came to a real word was "pumpkin" LOL, which doesn't make it more meaningful. It sounded to me like Bono forgot the lyrics and just made up his own words (which we kinda know he has a habit of doing).
Checking up the  real lyrics though: "Stand up, this is comedy. The DNA lottery may have left you smart. But can you..."
Happened to be the old "trying to squeeze too many words into one stanza" ;)

Up until a few days ago, I thought the line in Iris was "She marries a boy beneath the sand," not "She buries a boy beneath the sand." I know it makes no sense, but I was picturing getting married on a beach, and somehow thought of standing on the sand beneath the sun. I'm sure Iris got married in a church, so that wouldn't make sense anyway.

I know when HMTMKMKM came out, all I heard on the last verse was

"They'll want their money back if your a live honey bee."

It made much more sense when I learned the correct lyrics. And, I don't hear it the wrong way anymore.

correct:  They'll want their money back if your alive at thirty-three.

And, I've heard Bono throw in 53 during a live performance (probably when he was 53).

ah about not misheard by me but elsewhere, there's this clip from the spiderman thing: rise above. on some live show, and there's lyrics in the clip
where bono sings: i miss you in everything
the lyrics read: 'i miss you and everything'

though it could be read in a different manner, it always reads very 'ladida' to me. spoils it completely, always try to avert my eyes when that line comes on.

as i try to stop it just in time to prevent me seeing some spidermanlikefigure dropping down from the ceiling. do have a weakness for that song though, wish there was a better clip.

It took me a while for me to figure that one out - the verse had me so confused because I thought he was saying dipped feet, then "are we ready to be swept off our feet"...

I was like, why does he keep saying feet?  Does he have a foot fetish or something?  I love EBW but the rhyme always makes me laugh.
