Title: U2 Set to Appear on Jimmy Kimmel Next Week
Post by: tigerfan41 on May 18, 2017, 09:59:23 PM
I was just watching Jimmy Kimmel tonight and he announced that U2 will be on his show next week in celebration of the 30th anniversary of The Joshua Tree. He didn't mention what day they would be on specifically, but it sounds like he'll be interviewing them and they'll be performing, too.

They'll play Little Things and likely release it as a single the same night.

Not to mention SOE which will be available as an injection from all GP's and SOA which will be dispensed song by song as people use their local ATM (machines!).....

Obviously tunes would be a JT song and Little Things. I'm thinking In God's Country :)

It's gonna be ISHFWILF and/or RHMT. Wouldn't it be wonderful if they did exit and little things.

It would also be great if they did WOWY but with Bono singing it right for once

For those already jumping to conclusions about what this appearance is for... please note that Jimmy announced it as a celebration for TJT30. No one from his show or U2 have said anything about it being for the announcement of a new single, a new album, the continuation of the TJT17 tour or a new tour. Please try very hard to not put in your heads that this is what will be happening that night. Let's all try to prevent us from coming on here the day after and reading several dozen posts from a certain group of people who say they are very upset that the band "lied" to them and didn't announce any of these things, when in fact, the band never said anything about this appearance being for any of those reasons.

I think one of two things are going to happen:
1) They're going to play "Little Things" and then release a double album after the show, "Songs of Experience/Songs of Ascent."
-or-
2) They're going to play "Where the Streets Have No Name," and "Ms. Sarajevo," and a new album will follow in late 2019.

With U2 in LA this weekend and with the next show not until Wednesday, the timeline makes sense for an appearance though.

Wow Vox! Talk about extremes, lol.   It would seem a bit goofy for them to just talk about the Joshua Tree without dropping a new single, but I guess it's possible.  We'll find out! Also, I'm sure the album will be out later this year, or at latest March.

Would love to see them do Exit (with the Trump slam intro on a national broadcast) and then do the new track to tease the next record.

With the JT30 release  in less than two weeks after the TV , I think it's a safe bed both songs would be from JT30,
U2 are on to sell the JT30 and maybe if there is any unsold tickets

I sure hope you're right!  I just had to joke a little bit.  I'd be up for U2 giving me a surprise.

It will be yet another blown opportunity if a single isn't released during/after the show.

If two songs, I imagine one will be one of the "big 3" (likely ISHFWILF) and the other could be either Little Things or IGC.

I think this is spot on, Unlikely we'll have a new single released after the show. Not until the tour is finished can we start to think about new music?

That's awesome. Most intimate setting you could hope to meet the band in this summer.

Take pics if you can. Since you're gonna be in NYC at Kimmel's studio anyway, come a few hours early and look for the crowd of U2 fans waiting for the band to arrive to Kimmel studios.

The last time the band appeared on some talk show (~2009) to promote the 360 tour, fans who waited at the studio (was it Letterman or Leno or someone else) got to meet the band. I'm remembering snowy pics of Adam in his grey jacket.

So it films Tuesday (23 May), when does it air?

Nailed it.

I'm getting an Invisible/OL vibe with Little Things and Best Thing and whatever other Thing they're playing with. A release of a song they don't know what to do with, lukewarm response, then back in the studio to second guess and tinker with SoE for another year.

Yup, there are no other guests listed. Interestingly enough, if people were in LA on Tuesday they could've gotten free tickets.

They're just going to advertise the tour and the boxset and they'll play a few JT songs. The fact that they're going on a talk show for a 30 year old product is actually kind of sad, but I'll be tuning in.

Why is it sad?  I look at it as a testament to the album and U2 in general.  What other act take up the entire show?  Jimmy Kimmel is also a big fan of the band as well, so I am sure that has something to do with it as well.  He was one of the few people that questioned why people were losing their minds about the whole SOI and I-tunes.  Anyways, not sure why it is sad to you, I think it is great that U2 appears on such shows and that the studios devote the entire show to them.

I thought it was Fallon that was a big U2 fan. So is Conan (sadly conan's show can't pull U2 now). Nice to hear Kimmel is a fan too. Pretty excited for this, just to see them all dolled up and chatting (even if they'll probably cover heavy topics like Manchester and Bono recites his song lyrics about "no end to grief so no end to love" "I see humans but no humanity" etc).

Lmao! Yeah, Fallon is a ham. So I'm kinda glad it's Kimmel. I'll take any TV appearance they have.

A whole 40 minutes (after you exclude commercials). Might we have 3 band songs? 1 couch acoustic? Some stilted questions like "best tour moment so far" etc? Who will make it anti-T political? Kimmel or Bono?

Back on Conan, Bono had a segment alone to talk about his activism (Africa). Don't think that will happen on Kimmel tonight.

I'm actually pleasantly surprised that they played the new song, but they really should release the album by the fall if they want to make a successful impact.

I also loved the version of ISHF they performed. Without spoiling the rest of TJT tour, have they been performing the song with a chorus on tour?

what exactly did they say about SOE?
-There is still a lot of work to be done (although I thought they've already said it is done?)
-also said it is Edges fault because he is still mixing it
- basically gave no concrete answer

OK thanks I'll check back in again in 12 months. Yawn.

I wouldn't read too much into The Edge's comments. Most likely he doesn't want to put them in a box where they have to release the album by X date. I would assume based on previous interviews, plus the X-Mas video plus the fact that they just played a new song on TV, that they're pretty close to putting the new album out. Maybe they just don't have a firm date yet.

I still think it'll be out by year's end, possibly in November or December. The fact that they're playing a new song on tour AND just debuted it on TV is a good sign, imo.

They are making it sound like it is going to be a not so surprising "surprise" album drop. There is no way that anyone in their right mind would give a single this much airplay on a supposedly unfinished album without dropping said album within the next 3ish months.

That's the best sign I've seen yet that SoE (or at least the singles) aren't miles away - performing songs in concert is one thing, but it's another doing it on Late Night TV. Sounds great too, really excited for a studio version

I love Little Things.  It's a very mature song for the elder statesmen of rock music.  Bono sounds great.  I can't wait to get the official release!  I will be first in line to buy this SOE at the local record shop.

I see a real assurance from the band watching the interview and performances last night, I haven't seen them act that way in a long long time, it was so refreshing. Still haven't found was incredibly moving and The Little things has a real magical quality about it. I just hope the studio version gets it right. It's a tricky beast to nail down but I think they will get it in the bag.

Kudos to the band last night, they weren't miserable or poe faced, even Larry managed a joke or two and pushing Jimmy away to make way for the stage was a great idea.

Roll on July 8.

You know how Bono has often said that U2 saved his life when he was a kid? I feel like this song captures that feeling. Especially how Edge comes in with the guitar and then the whole band is there surrounding bono in sound as it builds and builds, supporting him through his anger and his grief.

The 'sometimes' part is a great part to improvise. Like he does sometimes on the 'words' part on Bad or the 'How many times' when he played with Bob Dylan

Can't wait to hear that bit in the studio version. It's a real wall of sound approach. Some people dismissed it as noise on the concert version but here it's crystal clear and spellbinding in it's delivery.

Yes that's it! Only the p-word is not clear and I can't think of a word that fits. I really like the song. Most of the words could be about my life. And I like the crescendo from start to end.

I really disliked this song until last night. It's started to grow on me.

I wouldn't be surprised if the single is released soon. Either as an individual track or as an instant grat track for an album pre-order.

It's one thing to add it into a concert, it's another thing to perform it during their airtime on TV.

Why perform something that might be coming out in 2018?

I don't think it would be released until after next Friday's JT30 release, to not sort of compete against it. But I wouldn't be surprised if a release of the song closely follows.

I haven't ever watched a Jimmy Kimmel Show. I've seen clips online and heard him in interviews and on other shows. He's seems to be a good dude. I've found him marginally funny at times. But, good Lord is he a terrible talk show host. That interview was painful. No logistical flow to the questions, no follow up to any answer. It's like he had five bullet points he had to hit, and that was it. No conversation at all. Are all his interviews this painfully bad? And that monologue was atrocious. Some not related at all. Let's go from Manchester bombing to, who started to band, to Donald Trump to five dollar tickets to....ugh. it was a mess.

That being said, it was nice to see U2. Their performances were great. Hopefully the damn Edge will stop in the studio and we'll get a fall SOE release.

I recorded it and will watch it at some point this week.  I haven't listened to the "Little Things" song all the way through -- only bits and pieces from opening night, so I can't really comment on the song.  But it's perplexing to me why U2 doesn't just release the song on iTunes, or something.  I think it'd surely chart, just because it's the new U2 song.  It was like when "Ordinary Love" came out, and the first recording I remember hearing of it was someone who was at the Mandela movie, recording the closing credits.  If they'd released the song officially this morning, I'm certain there'd be some buzz about it, along with a bunch of people like us who'd download it properly.

I watched both songs and clips of the interviews but haven't had a chance to watch the entire show I DVR'd last night.

I was really impressed.  I thought I had been over the whole "Gospel choir" version of ISHF for a long time, but I thought they nailed it musically and the band sounded great.  I thought the interviews were funny and relaxed and it was a welcome thing to be reminded of the Dalton Bros., which I'd completely forgotten about for years.  And then I was thrilled out of my mind to have a good version of The Little Things, which I gather I like a lot more than some people, because frankly all the concert versions had poor audio and/or Bono was exhausted by that time and you could tell.  While I appreciate the heart breaking timbre of his voice at the end of the concert and the lyrics, it was nice to have it be a little crisper.

I have no idea if they will release that song as a single and soon or never.  Didn't they play Mercy and Stingray half a dozen times and never release them?  And EBW too, before reworking it for years later?  I don't think we're guaranteed SOE soon, which includes a studio version.  But I sure hope we get it.  I'm not sure I want it so soon though.  If they released SOE now I'd be banging my head against a wall waiting for the SOE tour in 2018? 2019? And it would lose all the momentum.  Finish the JT Tour, go to the studio, release the album in January 2018, and then tour that summer.  Works better I think.

Anyone else watch who isn't a normal fan of Kimmel watch that show, btw, and think the best thing about being these guys like Kimmel or Jimmy Fallon or whatnot is that you get to meet U2?

I think it'll be better than MOS purely because it's more accessible. The studio version is going to be epic.

I'm pretty sure Kimmel (and similar shows) have a no cell phone policy.  Makes all the difference in the world in this context.  The audience really gets into the performance as Bono works the crowd.  In another place, everyone would have their cell phones out taking pics and not clapping, dancing, and singing.

Gotta change the culture at shows somehow....and I'm just as guilty at times.  Bands could release live performances with hi-res photos from various vantage points but I don't think it would help.

This is what makes the 2001 DVD's (Boston and Slane) so special to me. Last films before smartphones.

I no longer think that the 2 things are intrinsically linked. They've proven they don't need to release new music to tour, and they don't need to tour if they release new music in my opinion. They should just mix it all up a bit and move away from the dinosaur model of album release and tour cycle.

You know how Bono has often said that U2 saved his life when he was a kid? I feel like this song captures that feeling. Especially how Edge comes in with the guitar and then the whole band is there surrounding bono in sound as it builds and builds, supporting him through his anger and his grief.

Interesting.

I hear the song differently. I hear it as a painful exposure of the scars he has with celebrity and exposure.

Oh yea that's a part of it for sure too.

They'll play Little Things and likely release it as a single the same night.

Not to mention SOE which will be available as an injection from all GP's and SOA which will be dispensed song by song as people use their local ATM (machines!).....

You're thinking too 2014, An Tha. I heard they're teaming up with Russian hackers to inject it as a virus into all Apple and Samsung devices, locking them until you have listened to the entire thing.

The show was great. The band are in great spirits. Sadly, it confirmed we're at least a year away from SOE, and there is no intention to have an SOA.

It wouldn't, I'd think. For the most part, people take pictures to show off the picture that they took from their vantage point. Those are the ones that they want to text to their friends, post on social media, etc.

Unless that person was somehow in a picture that was taken, I don't really see people showing off pictures that a professional photographer took at a show frequently, if at all.

Nothing was said about when SOE will be released, nor anything mentioned about SOA either.  Edge joked about it being released sometime in the next 27 years - which to me means, very soon.

I can’t believe there was so little Kimmel content! 15 min interview, “Still Haven’t Found”, “Little Things”. That’s it.
Agree that Kimmel had no Segway between questions. He probably knew he had 15 minutes to “hit the high notes”:
- gotta ask about Manchester
- gotta ask about Trump, cos it’s Bono. Time to get Bono’s soundbite on my show!
- gotta ask JT questions so they can shill
- gotta mention “Larry started the band” as a means to get Larry to say SOMETHING
- mentioning Dalton opening act was a surprise and fun treat

Edge was very funny and entertaining (“Whose [butt] do you like the most?”). I bet they planned the seating arrangement ahead. Fun to have Edge upfront. They could never have Adam+Larry at the back.

Studio was eerily quiet when Bono was sharing his thoughts on Trump. I bet they flashed the “SILENCE” light. No cheering, no booing, nuthin’.

I don’t recall anyone (Larry?) being sullen on TV appearances before, but since it’s just 1 appearance this tour, I’m sure Larry (?) could grin through Kimmel. On 360 and even Vertigo tour, they did tons of TV & news interviews.
Adam is always so reserved on TV. He knows audiences know Bono best. I hope he would come out of his shell during JT concerts, which he does I suppose. (I hope to wave to Adam at the concert).

Taped it and just finished watching. The guys were quite funny. They must be a riot when hanging out together. Really good. I agree what was said without phone's the crowd gets right into it. That's the way it should be. 27 more years? Hmmm.....definetly not  too soon think.

I tuned in to last night's broadcast on my local affiliate to see if they had anything new or interesting to reveal to the viewing audience. I give credit to Bono for at least acting like he's engaged with Kimmel's questions, the rest of the band seemed like their normal selves in terms of their body language they displayed during the interview, which seemed to range from loose & relaxed (Adam) to feigning interest in the direction of the interview (Larry). I definitely agree with disgruntled Sherpa & Skelter's previous posts, the interview lacked focus & was all over the place, and that's not the band's fault but squarely on the shoulders of Kimmel & his writing staff in terms of coming up with questions.

What's most disappointing is that Kimmel couldn't come up with better questions to ask. I would expect this to come from Jimmy Fallon, not so much Kimmel. In past interviews with other guests, Kimmel has usually come across as better prepared with Q&A's that have a way of drawing out his guests to feel relaxed & engaged. It seems that whenever talk show hosts do interviews with U2, they turn into fanboys & leave any semblance of professionalism at the door.

OK, I'm confused (as usual).  During the U2 performance of The Little Things That Give You Away on the Jimmy Kimmel Show . . . . . at about 3:17 of the track . . . . Edge stops playing the keyboard and starts playing his guitar.  But music from the keyboard still continues.  I don't see anyone playing it.  Who is playing the keyboard music?

It used to be Bono who got the blame for album delays. Due to his other activities.

Now it seems it's the Edge.

Can't believe the other 3 are done with the album, but Edge is spending months in the studio pressing buttons.

No idea when TJT tour was decided. But once it was, SOE would be shelved until months after the tour finishes. That's if the album was finished in the first place.

What did they change on the lyrics? I heard "my thoughts are so reckless" instead of "my tasks are so thankless. But at the end there's something different too. Anyone knows what exactly?

I'm not certain but I hear:

Sometimes
When the ...(some word with a p)... in your shadows
And you're the only thing that matters
But I can see you through the tears
Sometimes

When the painted glass shatters
And you’re the only thing that matters
But I can’t see you through the fears

oh, pah. Major PAH! Well, I grew up on gospel, and truly love it (although I'm not such a "good girl"...I still love my gospel). And, actually, the version on the Kimmel show was better than the one on R&H, in my opinion.

Natch. Who cares about others' opinions, especially what songs they proudly hate?

Kimmel's ISHF was trending #40 on Wednesday night when I watched it on youtube. That's sweet relevancy. Spiderman trailer was #2 lmao.

And Edge was so spot on about performing as the Dalton Bros and having 30,000 people ignore you! Sadly that's how U2's opening band gets treated, even on 360 and probably JT tour.

I thought he sang Iris in the lower register just a year/two ago and it sounded great.  I think he just likes the higher voice better for some reason.

Since on Kimmel Bono said Edge mixes songs they've already released, Edge should put out an "album" of remixed old songs as a U2 fan club gift or something.

Whatever songs Edge wants to put out, whatever he's proud of. I'd kill to hear old songs WITH EXTRA EDGE VOCALS LAYER ON, and remixed the way Mr The Edge likes.

No, U2 won't make much $$ because the fan club CD would end up on youtube. But it's a cool platform for Edge to showcase any remixes he might be proud of. Yeah, he doesn't need a platform much. He's not in a struggling band.

I was really hoping that wouldn't go unappreciated!
I will hear that every time I hear Elevation from now on.
