General U2 Discussion / Little Things Album version
« Last post by mc on December 13, 2017, 01:12:00 PM »
Personally I am really dissapointed with the album version of Little Things. I think the band have made a mistake by filtering out the raw emotion of the piano version. That version always makes my hairs stand on end and brings me to tears, but no matter when or where I listen to the album version it has very little impact emotionally. This has to be one of the best songs of the 2000’s and I just wish they had left it alone. I think they have realised because they have released the piano version on Spotify.

General U2 Discussion / Re: Where are my SOE CD's????

My CDs from TM came in what looked like 2 pieces of trashy, cardboard squares taped together. I didn't get them for 2 extra days because I honestly thought it was trash that blew onto my porch. (I'm apparently slow at picking up unwanted trash. Don't judge.)

That's probably not the case with yours, but just thought I'd throw that possibility out there :). If you threw away a piece of cardboard, it was probably your CDs.

That's cool that they took the time to post this comprehensive list complete with links to the songs.  I've never heard several of the songs on the "worst" end of the list so I think I'll give some of them a listen.

I might reply later as to what they got right and what they got wrong....:-)

Thanks for posting!

Edit:  Somebody should add up the song rankings on a per album basis and divide by number of songs on said album to determine how this ranking would place the albums on average.  Maybe I will some day.

Amazing piece of work on NY Magazine's digital site...a labor of love from someone who clearly takes U2's work very seriously. So, so much to disagree with, from bottom to top. But I simply love that someone has done this.

General U2 Discussion / Re: U2 "Myths"
« Last post by Vox on December 13, 2017, 11:51:20 AM »
There is one U2 myth that bothers me more than the others.  I wrote about in 2015 here You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login

I copied and pasted my main point below.

Just wondering if anyone can explain something for me.  I remember having a few bootlegs on cassettes back in the late 80’s where Bono would introduce “Bad” by saying something like “this is a song about a good friend of ours who on his 21st birthday was given enough heroin to kill him… this is a song called ‘Bad,’” or something like that.  And I also seem to remember reading somewhere (a few times) that the song was about “survivor’s guilt” or how people deal with the death of a loved one from drugs.

Anywho – when reading the notes for Songs of Innocence, Bono mentions that “Raised By Wolves” is also written about the same person (Andy Rowen) and the bombing described in this song, it is inferred, is what turns him onto heroin.

Through the years in concert, Bono has described “Bad” as being about Andy Rowen specifically (who was alive and well enough to have the song dedicated to him at a U2 show in Pittsburgh in 2011, by the way)…..  To Bono at his most 80’s-Bonoesque talkin’ about the rich getting’ richer and the poor with needles hangin’ from their arms and all the sufferin’ in the world…  To specifically mentioning someone named Gareth Spaulding who died of a heroin overdose.

So is Bono continually making stuff up?  Protecting the innocent?  Too drunk to remember?  What do you think?  This kind of thing has always bothered me about U2 – sometimes it seems they mythologize themselves and rewrite their own past.  And for no good reason, really.

The Music and Lyrics / Re: When did this forums opinion start changing on NLOTH?

I liked No Line and it kept me going on many long car journeys from 2009-11.  It was maybe a little before it's time in that the experimental/meditative side was rubbished.  However, the mood seems right for contemplative U2 as Love is All We Have Left and 13 (There is a Light) seem to have gone down well with listeners.  Maybe people are more receptive to this contemplative/experimental/meditative side of U2 now the world has moved into challenging times?

I think the song goes something like:
"riffraff, riffraff, you make me laugh, riffy riffy, I'll be there in a jiffy"
LMAO !!! Someone should send him these lyrics...my life would then be complete!
Still more creative then the chorus of American Soul

LMAO! ;D

Haha!  If you dare go down to the woods today and find TalkU2, that's the kind of banter you'll discover!  ;D :D
