I find lists like this to be reductive and frustrating.  It's like pieces of evidence being presented on a case to convict U2 of being stuck in the past, or cashing in.

David Bowie, a certifiable iconoclast who was endlessly lauded for being current and never looking back, did John I'm Only Dancing (Again) in the mid-70's, and wrote a sequel of sorts to his first hit back in 1980.  He did a greatest hits tour in 1990.  He re-recorded his early songs for an as-yet unreleased album in the early 2000's.  These facts don't detract from the work he did, and U2 recognizing their own past doesn't detract from theirs.

Okay, but the devil's in the detail and it's not quite the same as the classic album/anniversary/nostalgia run though gig that is so commonplace today -

John I'm Only Dancing (Again) is mostly an original song with a similar chorus to the original which was then a mere 3 years old. Ashes to Ashes is again an original song that only namechecks Major Tom. As for 'Toy'? these songs were all released as B Sides from the Heathen period, plus the concept was essentially contemporary reworkings of the 1965-1967 Deram era catalogue that preceded his RCA debut and these are songs that very few people sans the diehards would have heard. Imagine U2 re-recording Another Day, Speed of Life or Street Mission in 2002? Bowie always did this, little cheeky nods to his past; Absolute Beginners features the vocal "bah bah bah ooo" whoops from The Prettiest Star for instance.

Sure, but my point is that for all of the accusations being lobbed at U2 for "looking back", the very same ones can be lobbed at practically anyone if you care to, and seemingly anything can be evidence of.  Invisible is an original song, period.  It doesn't ape anything in particular of their early work, it just takes inspiration from an early point in their life.  But that's presented as evidence of U2's downward trajectory or something.

TJT17 is certainly not their first look back, no.  Frankly, I'm surprised nobody mentioned the Zoo TV encore on the Vertigo Tour.  That was a look backward, too, and I happened to love it.  If the point is that TJT17 isn't U2's first look backward despite what Bono says, then sure.  But my issue is more with the implication that "...and therefore that's evidence that they're washed up, selling out, etc."  Maybe I'm mis-interpreting the thread, but that's the impression I get.

No way! Bono and I will share our love with each other.  Didn't you know that he was born to be with me?
