What was that song? Who sang it? What was it about? Translation?

Dubinushka (The Little Cudgel) - it's a Russian folk song used by manual labourers to keep a rhythm, apparently. The lyrics you hear on the ZooTV tour roughly translate as:

I have heard many songs all around the land
They have told me of joy and of woe
But my memory holds just one song of them all
That's the song of the body of workers

I'm so happy that so many people share my sentiment about the album !

It's a shame because it's considered a minor album or a misfire but there's so much more than that into it.

I have this playlist that I find much more satisfying than the album :

Soon
Magnificent
No Line on the Horizon
White as Snow
Being Born (I removed the Fez intro)
Winter
Get on your Boots
Moment of Surrender
Cedars of Lebanon

I would love to know what occured behind the scenes. The band sounds insecure about the direction they should take. I know Daniel Lanois said he would have loved it if the band had released the tapes from an earlier version of the album. I'd love to hear that. Whatever happened, it put an end to the collaboration between U2, Eno and Lanois. Damn shame.

Edit : and I'll add this, to me it also lead to one of U2's most boring tour.

I wouldn’t necessarily say put it to an end.  They switch around producers alot but often come back to Lillywhite, Eno, and Lanois.

Have you reread your comments on the first page of this thread lately? It's like everything you wished for.

What, my wishful thinking about him appearing on this tour as the voice of Experience? I know!! Can't believe I was right all along about that. I mean, it made sense - the clues were there - but I was basically joking, I didn't dare to hope they would actually do it! Was the MacPhisto megaphone a sneaky bit of foreshadowing...?

I'm sure they are aware of your site and therefore that SOMEBODY at least has been pulling for this.

I keep wondering about that. It's hard to imagine that anyone in the band's circle would have seen or paid any attention to my fansite, and it's entirely possible that this is all a coincidence and they just had the same ideas as me. Then again, it's right there on the Internet where someone influential *could* stumble across it, and I'm kind of stunned that all this has happened right after I wrote several paragraphs about what perfect timing it would be. I'll probably never know if I played any part in this or not. It'd be pretty mindblowing if I succeeded in altering the course of U2 history, haha!

I think it's just a Russian opera singer on vinyl that U2 decided to mock.

I hear ya on Showman, it felt weak but there's also something there. I've been trying to figure out the style/genre of the song. I'm sure it's blatently obvious but it eludes me. It's fairly old fashioned in some way, it's not a modern style.
